Contactless acquisition of fingerprints presents a fundamental departure from legacy capture technologies. The friction ridge surface that comprises a fingerprint is a three-dimensional topography superimposed upon a three-dimensional curved surface of a finger presenting many challenges in both acquisition as well as interoperability with legacy contact collected imagery. In this presentation we will discuss NIST’s work in the area of standardizing this nascent technology, and the challenges in doing so. The pervasive presence of GPS technology has profoundly altered various aspects of our society. This talk on Global Positioning System (GPS) is the first in a two-part series, hosted by the Long Island Section's Consultants Network. The second part will be on April 4. Satellite navigation systems emerged at the end of the 20th century. The first was the US version known as the Global Positioning System (GPS) which greatly improved the range and accuracy of a position fix when compared to previous navigation systems. In Part 1 of this two part series, we will learn the basics of how GPS works. A constellation of satellites and ground control stations are at the heart of the system. Atomic clocks in satellites are synchronized by ground control stations that also monitor the satellite’s exact position. Satellites broadcast their orbital information allowing earth-bound receivers to triangulate their position. While straight forward in principle the implementation of the system is complex requiring advanced orbital mechanics and mathematics that is beyond the scope of this lecture. Basic orbital mechanics will be covered but the focus of the lecture will be the over-all description of the GPS system including its operation and limitations. The modern electronic components are rigid, solid, and stiff – a terrible match for soft, squishy, and deformable tissue such as human skin or inner organs such as the brain. The material mismatch results in the conceptual incompatibility of modern electronics with biological tissue. Nanoscale materials, such as graphene and other 2D materials, on the other hand, are unique constructs: in addition to their apparent unobtrusive atomic thickness, they are flexible, transparent, and biocompatible, matching perfectly with biological tissue. Using atomically thin and electrically conductive graphene electronic tattoos (GETs), we developed imperceptible monitoring technologies for measuring blood pressure with an unprecedented accuracy. Unlike other wearables, GETs are lightweight and skin-conformable, eliminating discomfort during long-term monitoring. Recently, we also translated this technology into implantable sensors, demonstrating the sensing and stimulation of the mammalian heart, including treatment of arrhythmia with graphene pacemakers. The arrays show superior electrochemical properties, while the transparency of the graphene structures allows for simultaneous optical mapping of cardiac action potentials and optogenetic stimulation. Additionally, we advanced in creating tissue-integratable bioelectronic systems resembling biological neurons using soft, flexible, and biocompatible artificial synaptic neuromorphic transistors based on graphene and Nafion, boosting superior energy efficiency. Taken together, these breakthroughs on wearable, implantable, and neuromorphic frontiers open up new possibilities for wearable and implantable graphene (and other 2D Materials like MoS2, PtSe2, PtTe2, and others) bioelectronics to transform healthcare. The ECE Students from UMU will be participating in a technical visit to Foxconn. Below is a copy of the email sent by a representative from Foxconn to promote the visit. We are presently building electric tractors for a company named Monarch. We are also in negotiations with several manufacturers regarding new business opportunities. These are all related to Electric Vehicle manufacturing. Some of these products are ride share vehicles. Others are midsize and full-size delivery vehicles. In our body shop, we build the entire cab of the vehicle from steel and aluminum parts. We place the parts in custom designed mechanical fixtures. We use welding robots to automatically weld the parts together. Then material handling robots pick up the new assembly and move it to the next automation station. The next station may automatically dispense adhesive or sealer under robot control. Then more parts may be added, and more welding takes place. All the robotic welding and sealing is coordinated by Allen Bradley PLCs that communicate to the robots, weld controllers and sealant systems. We need: - Mechanical engineers to design and analyze fixture details and subassembly dimensions. - Controls engineers to write and adjust PLC programs to control the automation. - Electrical engineers to design and maintain the control circuits and safety systems. - Computer Engineers to design, program and maintain the vision systems, data collection equipment and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). - Industrial engineers to design, analyze and improve the production processes. The term “Artificial Intelligence” was coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to attract more attention to the planned Computer Science Conference at Dartmouth. Ever since, the society expected someday machines will do the manual labor and thinking for us and we will live in a society of leisure surrounded by unlimited number of “Machine-Servants.” Even after 68 years, we have not realized that Utopian Society. We may be closer than ever, but we are not there, and may never be. If we examine the history of science and technology, we will realize mere invention of a technology will not automatically improve the society. Machines that can do what we do must be invented before the promise of the inventions could be fully realized. Invention of steam engine did not automatically benefit farmers until machines like tractor and harvester were developed. Invention of electricity didn’t automatically impact society until the lightbulb, motors, etc. were developed. Recent developments in Generative AI and the possibility of developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has led to wild speculations on the future of society. [] Abstract: More than 80% consumer Internet traffic is for videos and most of them are recorded videos. Meanwhile, many organizations (such as national parks, vacation resorts, departments of transportation) provide real-time visual data (images or videos). These videos allow Internet users to observe events remotely. This speech explains how to discover real-time visual data on the Internet. The discovery process uses a crawler to reach many web pages. The information on these web pages are analyzed to identify candidates of real-time data. The data is downloaded multiple times over an extended time period; changes are detected to determine whether it is likely to provide real-time data. The data can be used during an emergency. For example, viewers may check whether a street is flooded and cannot pass. It is also possible using the data to observe long-term trends, such as how people react to movement restrictions during the COVID pandemic. Bio: Yung-Hsiang Lu is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. He is a University Faculty Scholar of Purdue University. Electrical engineering students at UMaine built this CubeSat, which is 30 cm long with cross section of 10 cm x 10 cm, carries 4 multi-spectral cameras, and three radios. MESAT1 is scheduled to be launched to space from Vandenberg Space Force base onboard Firefly rocket in May 2024. It carries three payloads designed by Falmouth High school, Fryeburg Academy, and Saco Middle School students and teachers. UMaine has been collaborating with USM, AMSAT and NERRS to design and get the spacecraft ready for launch. The initial prototypes were built at Innovative Media Research and Commercialization (IMRC) center and final flight certifications including vibration tests was completed at Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC). Collecting information on individual animals’ vocal and movement behavior is important in many ecological and behavioral applications. However, gathering this information in wild animals may be especially challenging, time-consuming, invasive, or disruptive. This talk will describe a non-invasive method we engineered for gathering behavioral data for individual wild birds at large scales. We gather acoustic data using an array of 49 autonomous recorders. Audio is precisely time-stamped and synchronized using GPS receivers onboard the sound recorder. To estimate birds’ positions, we created tools for automated song detection and localization in OpenSoundscape, an open-source Python package for bioacoustic analyses. In particular, we create machine learning algorithms to detect the songs of each species, use a spatial-matching algorithm to match up detections of the same sound event recorded on multiple microphones, then estimate the position from which each sound event was sung. I will discuss several applications of these new techniques, including mapping individual birds’ home territories, estimating bird population sizes, observing birds’ movement and behavior, and creating libraries of individual birds’ distinctive voices. With the rapid development of Internet of Things, a vast number of small, low-cost, and low-power mobile electronic devices, such as radio frequency identification tags and wireless sensors, will become integral parts of our society. Supplying electrical power to these devices wirelessly would eliminate/relieve their battery life limitation. Since wireless power delivery must be dedicated to the designated receivers in space, it is inevitable to employ one narrow electromagnetic beam as the carrier of wireless power toward each mobile device. The retro-reflective beamforming technique has excellent potential to accomplish efficient wireless power transmission in the context of Internet of Things and can track multiple mobile devices, generating wireless power to the devices accordingly. The primary merit of retro-reflective beamforming technique is that wireless power transmission is augmented by radar tracking. Specifically, wireless power transmission is initiated by pilot signals broadcasted from wireless power receiver(s); and in response to the pilot signals, a wireless power transmitter delivers directional microwave power beams to the receiver(s). Results collected in our research demonstrate that the retro-reflective beamforming scheme enables microwave power beams to follow the location of mobile wireless power receiver(s) dynamically when the receiver(s) broadcast pilot signals periodically. The THz portion of the electromagnetic spectrum presents notable challenges for technological development. This band straddles the domains of classical electromagnetics and photonics, creating a philosophical and practical conflict due to the dual nature of light. This dilemma has historically been termed the "THz gap," characterized by difficulties in generation and propagation. In an AFIT dissertation, research will be conducted to address these issues. The Center for Technical Intelligence Studies and Research (CTISR) has conducted preliminary research using superconductors to transmit THz waves. This dissertation will extend that work by fully characterizing antenna pattern characteristics within the confines of current measurement capabilities and will look to inform future designs for the THz regime. Additionally, THz wave propagation through the atmosphere is significantly attenuated by water vapor absorption in certain sub-bands. The AFIT Center for Directed Energy's HELEEOS code will be examined to potentially refine the prediction of THz propagation characteristics. Time-Domain Spectroscopy (TDS) will be employed to validate these models.
