Collecting information on individual animals’ vocal and movement behavior is important in many ecological and behavioral applications. However, gathering this information in wild animals may be especially challenging, time-consuming, invasive, or disruptive. This talk will describe a non-invasive method we engineered for gathering behavioral data for individual wild birds at large scales. We gather acoustic data using an array of 49 autonomous recorders. Audio is precisely time-stamped and synchronized using GPS receivers onboard the sound recorder. To estimate birds’ positions, we created tools for automated song detection and localization in OpenSoundscape, an open-source Python package for bioacoustic analyses. In particular, we create machine learning algorithms to detect the songs of each species, use a spatial-matching algorithm to match up detections of the same sound event recorded on multiple microphones, then estimate the position from which each sound event was sung. I will discuss several applications of these new techniques, including mapping individual birds’ home territories, estimating bird population sizes, observing birds’ movement and behavior, and creating libraries of individual birds’ distinctive voices. With the rapid development of Internet of Things, a vast number of small, low-cost, and low-power mobile electronic devices, such as radio frequency identification tags and wireless sensors, will become integral parts of our society. Supplying electrical power to these devices wirelessly would eliminate/relieve their battery life limitation. Since wireless power delivery must be dedicated to the designated receivers in space, it is inevitable to employ one narrow electromagnetic beam as the carrier of wireless power toward each mobile device. The retro-reflective beamforming technique has excellent potential to accomplish efficient wireless power transmission in the context of Internet of Things and can track multiple mobile devices, generating wireless power to the devices accordingly. The primary merit of retro-reflective beamforming technique is that wireless power transmission is augmented by radar tracking. Specifically, wireless power transmission is initiated by pilot signals broadcasted from wireless power receiver(s); and in response to the pilot signals, a wireless power transmitter delivers directional microwave power beams to the receiver(s). Results collected in our research demonstrate that the retro-reflective beamforming scheme enables microwave power beams to follow the location of mobile wireless power receiver(s) dynamically when the receiver(s) broadcast pilot signals periodically. His protocols, algorithms and architectures have been incorporated into a broad range of commercial and US national security networks. Junaid began his career in the late 80s as an Expeditionary Communications Technician. In the 90s he developed the first implementation of Multi-Level Precedence and Preemption (MLPP) for US Department of Defense C2 applications using Frame Relay at StrataCom. At Cisco Junaid contributed to the priority queuing and buffer management for MPLS routing. Junaid next developed the first working Mobile IPv6 client to enable fast hand-off as well as IPv6 address scrambling for high side networks for the DoD’s Netcentric Warfare program. Most recently Junaid developed the first network-based Zero Trust Architecture using Software Defined Perimeter (SDP) which was adopted by NIST for their Zero Trust specification 800-207. Currently Junaid is developing new protocols for secure Smart City applications such as Energy and Transportation systems. Additionally Junaid also developed a new packet scheduling algorithm for wireless communications that integrates priority, network load and RF interference data. Yet many challenges still remain. High performance model graphs are still written as kernels by experts and these are also deployed manually using custom operation hooks in frameworks. In this talk we will describe some of the challenges in compiling dynamic shapes and designing intermediate representations that enable automatic kernel generation. Bio: Vinod Grover is a Sr. Distinguished Engineer at NVIDIA. He has been with NVIDIA since 2007 where he led a team that developed the CUDA C++ language and compiler for programming GPUs. CUDA C++ has been a key catalyst in driving productivity, performance and innovation in many fields. Since 2017, Vinod has been focused on bringing the same productivity and performance to the problem of accelerating Deep Learning models by using important ideas from language design and compiler technology. He is currently leading a small group that is focused on problems of performance and productivity to the development of ML models. [] Large Language Models (LLMs) are being used widely in current Generative AI systems. Unfortunately, LLMs demonstrate significant capabilities but face challenges such as hallucination, outdated knowledge, and non-transparent, untraceable reasoning processes. Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) has emerged as a promising solution by incorporating knowledge from external databases. This enhances the accuracy and credibility of the models, particularly for knowledge-intensive tasks, and allows for continuous knowledge updates and integration of domain-specific information. RAG synergistically merges LLMs' intrinsic knowledge with the vast, dynamic repositories of external databases. Finally, an overview of research challenges and opportunities will be presented to stimulate further collaborative research. Recent interest in joint radar-communications (JRC) has led to the design of novel signal processing techniques to recover information from an overlaid radar-communications signal as well as transmit a common signal for both systems. The interest in learning-based JRC is driven largely by the need to solve difficult nonconvex optimization problems inherent in a JRC design as well as to address the highly dynamic channel environments. Toward fully realizing the coexistence/co-design of both radar and communications, the optimization of resources for both sensing and wireless communications modalities is crucial. But the optimization-based approaches suffer from high computational complexity and their performance strongly relies on factors such as perfect channel conditions, specific constraints, and mobility. In this context, learning techniques provide robust performance at an upfront training cost. We discuss applying learning to various JRC aspects including channel estimation, antenna selection, resource allocation, and wideband beamforming. The second half of the talk focuses on exploiting sparsity in a general spectral coexistence scenario, wherein the channels and transmit signals of both radar and communications systems are unknown at the receiver. In this dual-blind deconvolution (DBD) problem, a common receiver admits a multi-carrier wireless communications signal that is overlaid with the radar signal reflected off multiple targets. The communications and radar channels are represented by continuous-valued range-time and Doppler velocities of multiple transmission paths and multiple targets. We exploit the sparsity of both channels to solve the highly ill-posed DBD problem by casting it into a sum of multivariate atomic norms (SoMAN) minimization. Toward the end of the talk, we focus on highlighting emerging JRC scenarios, particularly at mm-Wave and THz frequencies, vehicular applications, distributed radar-communications networks, intelligent surfaces, and aerial channels. Abstract: In this talk, we focus on the recent developments toward integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). We consider a broad definition of coexistence, which covers ISAC, collaborative communications, and sensing with interference. Toward fully realizing the coexistence of the two systems, optimization of resources for both new/futuristic sensing and wireless communications modalities is crucial. These synergistic approaches that exploit the interplay between state sensing and communications are both driving factors and opportunities for many current signal processing and information-theoretic techniques. In addition, a large body of prior works considers colocated ISAC systems while distributed systems remain relatively unexamined. Building on the existing approaches, the tutorial focuses on highlighting emerging scenarios in collaborative and distributed ISAC, particularly at mm-Wave and THz frequencies, highly dynamic vehicular/automotive environments that would benefit from information exchange between the two systems. It presents the architectures and possible methodologies for mutually beneficial distributed co-existence and co-design, including sensor fusion and heterogeneously distributed radar and communications. The tutorial also considers recent developments such as the deployment of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) in ISAC, 5G systems, passive internet-of-things, and ISAC secrecy rate optimization. This tutorial aims to draw the attention of the radar, communications, and signal processing communities toward an emerging area, which can benefit from the cross-fertilization of ideas in distributed systems.
