Driving the Future of Renewable Energy: Insights from Dr. Benjamin Kroposki
October 28 @ 6:00 PM - November 19 @ 7:00 PM EDT
On October 29, 2024, we had the privilege of hosting Benjamin D. Kroposki, P.E., Director of the Power Systems Engineering Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), for an engaging talk on “Integrating Massive Amounts of Wind and Solar in Electric Grids.”
As more states and utilities across the U.S. set ambitious 100% clean energy goals, renewable technologies like wind and solar photovoltaics (PV) play a crucial role in shaping the future of energy. Dr. Kroposki highlighted how these variable renewable energy sources differ from conventional generation, as they rely on power electronic converters instead of synchronous generators to connect to the grid.
While the grid can handle small levels of variable renewable integration seamlessly, higher penetration levels introduce technical challenges that must be addressed to ensure reliable and economical operations. Dr. Kroposki’s presentation focused on these challenges and explored innovative solutions, such as the use of grid-forming inverters, which are critical to maintaining grid stability and performance at high levels of renewable integration.
The event brought together students, faculty, and industry professionals, fostering meaningful discussions about the future of renewable energy. We thank Dr. Kroposki for sharing his expertise and inspiring us to push the boundaries of sustainable energy innovation.
