Section Report

There were several excellent IEEE technical presentations last month. Dr. Jon Ward’s COMSOC presentation on “Base Station Anonymity in Wireless Sensor Networks” on Tuesday, January 12 started with an explanation of why an attacker may want to identify which node of an ad hoc network acts as a base and some link and network layer techniques to hide it. He then presented simulation results showing how distributed beamforming could prevent a passive attacker using evidence theory from reliably identifying the base station. Download his slides at https://webinabox.vtools.ieee.org/wibp_site_files/index/CH02009.

On Thursday, January 21, Howard Cox made his case for a dialog between law enforcement and industry on support for access to stored encrypted communication on mobile devices. Drawing on examples from past cases and parallels between the physical and digital worlds, the former CIA Assistant Inspector General with nearly four decades of federal service and current instructor and GWU adjunct professor spoke at a Computer Society talk jointly sponsored by the Northern VA Information Systems Security Association.

Though you can read about both topics online you miss the perspectives that come from audience questions and comments. See the Upcoming Events below for ones postponed due to snow and new ones for February. You can also visit the calendar on the emerging IEEE Northern VA Section website, http://sites.ieee.org/nova/, for later months.

                                                Marty Schulman

                                                2016 IEEE Northern VA Chair

Open Positions

Our section’s Professional Activities Committees for Engineers (PACE) Chair promotes professional activities for section members and interfaces with the region and IEEE-USA. Activities include everything from reviewing matching funding requests for eligible events to organizing professional development, employment assistance, and government relationship projects. Projects and other links at https://www.ieeeusa.org/volunteers/pace/ for more details and contact Marty Schulman, schulman@ieee.org, if interested.

The Electron Devices Society (EDS) Chapter and the Nanotechnology Council (NTC) hold technical meetings and provide professional networking opportunities. Members are invited to run for Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary. Contact j.h.smith@ieee.org for EDS and nfhaddad@aol.com for NTC.

If you’re interested in any of these roles but lack experience, come to the National Capital Area IEEE Leadership Training event from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 6 in Crystal City. Some of the most seasoned members from Northern VA, Washington, and Baltimore will present everything you need to know about the IEEE’s practices and tools, but you must register at https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/37854.

Acknowledgements

Arranging meeting space in Northern, VA for a large group is a huge challenge.  The IEEE Northern VA Section sincerely appreciates DeVry University’s Dean Valerie Senatore and Faculty Chair and Professor Barry Douglass for allowing us to use their well-equipped classrooms on numerous occasions.

Survey

Last week’s newsletter asked for the type of section activities in which you were interested. There were not enough responses to present meaningful results, so we’ll put it back into the question pool and move to February’s short monthly survey about Social Media. It should take only a minute or two and may help our section keep you informed.
