IEEE Northern VA Section Newsletter for January 2016

IEEE Northern VA Section Newsletter, January 2016

As a member of the IEEE Northern Virginia Section you can get involved alongside nearly 5000 other local professionals from a variety of companies and organizations in industries like communications, healthcare, transportation, as well as civilian and defense agencies. This year again looks to provide many great opportunities, including:

  • Technical Presentations: We have nearly 30 Society Chapters (some joint with Washington and/or Baltimore Sections) which typically feature a speaker at their meetings. The Computer Society and Communications Society are particularly active, and if your society isn’t represented you can petition to start a chapter.
  • Conferences: Five technical conferences are already scheduled in Northern Virginia this year, and one of the largest and most renown IEEE events, GLOBECOM 2016, will be held in Washington, DC in December. They may need volunteers to assist in exchange for program access.
  • Promoting STEM: In the spring our section sends judges to the major regional science fairs to give cash awards to projects with significant EE-related content. Members are sometimes invited to become category judges at middle school fairs and recently at Virginia FIRST robotics matches. We have also offered volunteers for Camp Invention, supported science kits at local libraries, and staffed tables at the Discover Engineering Family Day in the National Building Museum.
  • Social Gatherings: In the spring the Northern VA Section holds an annual awards and recognition banquet in conjunction with the Washington DC section. At the end of summer a picnic is held.

None of these events are finalized until approved by the Northern VA Administrative Committee (ADCOM), which meets the second Wednesday evening of the month at Teqcorner in McLean. All IEEE members are welcome to attend and provide input, but since room occupancy is limited and refreshments are provided please register at https://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/m/37682.

Acknowledgements

Thank you to outgoing officers, 2015 Chair Jim Magee, Vice-Chair Joel Goodman, Treasurer Thomas Tulia, and Secretary Sandra Hyland, as well as outgoing Directors Arye Ephrath and Fred Seelig. They all gave generous amounts of their time preparing for, attending, and following up from meetings – not to mention on the road driving to and from them – while moving section business forward. We expect to benefit from their experience throughout the year.
