Standardization of Contactless Fingerprint Capture
Standardization of Contactless Fingerprint Capture
Contactless acquisition of fingerprints presents a fundamental departure from legacy capture technologies. The friction ridge surface that comprises a fingerprint is a three-dimensional topography superimposed upon a three-dimensional curved surface of a finger presenting many challenges in both acquisition as well as interoperability with legacy contact collected imagery. In this presentation we will discuss NIST’s work in the area of standardizing this nascent technology, and the challenges in doing so. Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Alvaro Velasquez: Frontiers in Neuro-Symbolic AI: Going Beyond Vision and Language
Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Alvaro Velasquez: Frontiers in Neuro-Symbolic AI: Going Beyond Vision and Language
Abstract: Foundation models, including Chat-GPT and its many variants, have come into prominence in the natural language processing (NLP) community thanks the ubiquity of text data readily available on the internet and the design of modern transformer architectures that can effectively learn from such data. However, domains at the frontier of AI, including supply chain optimization and sequential decision-making, are faced with additional challenges not present in NLP and vision. In this talk, we discuss some of these challenges and the promise of neuro-symbolic AI in addressing them. Speaker Bio: Alvaro Velasquez is a program manager at DARPA, where he currently leads programs on neuro-symbolic and adversarial AI. Before that, Alvaro oversaw the machine intelligence portfolio for the Information Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Alvaro is a recipient of the distinguished paper award from AAAI and best paper and patent awards from AFRL. He has authored over 80 papers and two patents and serves as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence. Co-sponsored by: Center for Machine Learning at UMIACS, University of Maryland Speaker(s): Alvaro Velasquez Room: 4105, Bldg: Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering, 8125 Paint Branch Dr, College Park, Maryland, United States, 20740, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/408959

AI-Powered Math Information Retrieval: What We Have & What We Need
AI-Powered Math Information Retrieval: What We Have & What We Need
IEEE Maine Joint Communications/Computer Societies Chapter and UMaine AI invite you to a live virtual event on Thursday, March 7, 12-1 PM EDT: Math Information Retrieval: What We Have & What We Need presented by Behrooz Mansouri, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, University of Southern Maine. Abstract: This talk introduces math information retrieval, discussing the challenges, existing systems, and open problems in this domain. Math information retrieval (MIR) presents unique challenges due to the structured nature of mathematical language and symbols. Despite recent advancements like digital libraries and specialized search engines, the field of MIR still deals with ambiguities and accurately addressing users’ information needs. This presentation emphasizes ongoing efforts to develop test collections, search systems, and conduct user studies for MIR. Coordinated with Computer Society Region 1 and Region 2 Chapters Coordinator. The presentation will be followed by Q & A, moderated by Julia Upton, IEEE Maine Joint Communications/Computer Societies Chapter Chair. GLOBAL NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM – GPS, PART 1
GLOBAL NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM – GPS, PART 1
The pervasive presence of GPS technology has profoundly altered various aspects of our society. This talk on Global Positioning System (GPS) is the first in a two-part series, hosted by the Long Island Section's Consultants Network. The second part will be on April 4. Satellite navigation systems emerged at the end of the 20th century. The first was the US version known as the Global Positioning System (GPS) which greatly improved the range and accuracy of a position fix when compared to previous navigation systems. In Part 1 of this two part series, we will learn the basics of how GPS works. A constellation of satellites and ground control stations are at the heart of the system. Atomic clocks in satellites are synchronized by ground control stations that also monitor the satellite’s exact position. Satellites broadcast their orbital information allowing earth-bound receivers to triangulate their position. While straight forward in principle the implementation of the system is complex requiring advanced orbital mechanics and mathematics that is beyond the scope of this lecture. Basic orbital mechanics will be covered but the focus of the lecture will be the over-all description of the GPS system including its operation and limitations.
