Next generation of wireless power transfer network of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS
This talk highlights the next generation of wireless power transfer (WPT) network concept that is scalable, safe, and efficient and can be deployed in a UAS by incorporating waveform engineering, electromechanical beamforming, integrated phased-array antenna, and transmitter (TX)/receiver (RX) co-design. Although interest in radiative (far-field) WPT using beamforming has been growing rapidly because of its capability to energize a large number of autonomous devices, most of these works are still in the theoretical phase without any practical implementation. This talk presents the implementation of a distributed beamforming network using a bottom-up approach (from the antenna to the inter-connected network) that is highly important for addressing the challenges associated with a dynamically changing environment. Practical system-level implementation strategies and multi-scale and multi-technique approaches to building a resilient WPT network for UAVs will be discussed. First, the challenges associated with the dual approach of electrical beamforming and the mechanical steering of the TX antennas to maximize the RF-RF link efficiency will be discussed. Secondly, an investigation of the efficient rectifier circuitry designed on-chip as well as commercial off-the-shelf components (COTS) to maximize the power conversion efficiency RF-DC efficiency will be presented. Finally, future research directions on increasing the power transfer distance to scale up the amount of power delivered to the load for the proposed wireless power beaming network system will be highlighted. Careers in Technology Summer Series 2024 – Arun Vishwanathan – Model-based Approaches for Cyber Risk Assessment of Space Missions
Space assets such as satellites, drones and spacecraft are increasingly attractive targets for adversaries ranging from individual hackers, to hacker groups and nation states. This rapid rise in the cyber threat landscape necessitates smarter cyber tools to stay ahead of our adversaries. In this talk, I will present the work being done by the Cyber Defense Engineering and Research (CDER) group at JPL in addressing cyber challenges as pertaining to JPL’s missions. I will specifically focus on our work combining model-based engineering and AI-based reasoning to build a unique capability for automated cyber risk assessments. MOVE Tech Talk – JUL 2024 – IEEE Smart Village
MOVE Tech Talk – JUL 2024 – IEEE Smart Village
IEEE Smart Village (ISV) has a unique approach to support the world’s energy-impoverished communities by providing a comprehensive solution combining renewable energy, community-based education, and entrepreneurial opportunities. ISV provides seed-funding to carefully selected community entrepreneurs based upon a credible business plan that will impact significant number of people with electricity, education and jobs. The challenges of starting and sustaining a successful business in the developing world are extreme to say the least. The IEEE Smart Village entrepreneurs are the true heroes. They have learned to build the confidence and support of their local communities. They consistently demonstrate a deep respect for preserving the best of local cultures and heritages while gracefully introducing new technology and business practices. Some of the challenges that they have had to overcome include extremes of climate, altitude, floods, currency devaluations, power blackouts, media blackouts, political instability, local rivalries and contentious elections. IEEE Event at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant
IEEE Event at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant
IEEE plays an important part in the design and license requirements for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant, and The Perry Nuclear Plant is an important generator for generating clean and reliable energy on the nation’s electric grid. This event will include a small tour of equipment and buildings observable from outside the security fences as well as a presentation discussing the plant and its relationship with IEEE. It will end with a demonstration of the Control Room Simulator, which is the 1:1 mock-up of the actual plant's Control Room, used by the plant operators for training and proficiency. A survey link is included below so that the presentation can be tailored to attendee interests. The event is limited to 20 participants and pre-registration is required. Logistics: The plant's main gate is at the corner of Center Road and Parmly Road. Follow the road onto the site past the canopy structure immediately on the left. Continue down the road to the first parking lot on the left. The signs will indicate it is the training building. Come in the front door and we will muster in the lobby while everyone arrives. See the attached image for navigating onsite.
