IEEE Northern Virginia (NoVA) Section Newsletter – December 2019

Happy Holidays and best wishes to you and your families for a happy and healthy new year.

It is hard to believe that a year has gone by since I became Chair of the Northern Virginia Section of the IEEE. In a few weeks, I will be passing responsibility to the new Chair and officers. At this time, I would like to thank everyone who has worked with me this year. This includes the section Officers (Michaela Iorga, Dmitry Cousin and Barry Douglas) and Directors (Joel Goodman, Nadim Haddad, Kiki Ikossi, Uday Krishna, Bhaskara Moole, William Scheible, Martin Schulman, and Iram Weinstein) as well as the Chapter/Council/Affinity Group Chairs and Committee Chairs (too numerous to mention and I am sure that I would miss someone if I attempt to enumerate them). Without this team, the section’s activities could not continue.

Section News

If you haven’t already renewed your IEEE membership, do it now before it slips your mind during the upcoming holiday season. The renewal period is a good time to review your Society memberships and determine which Societies fit your technical interests.

Also, please take the time to vote for 2020 NoVA Officers and Directors. The Nominating Committee has assembled a list of well-qualified candidates. An email inviting you to vote was distributed on November 30th when the election opened. It will close on December 14th. The new officers will be announced shortly after the election period ends.

Volunteering

It is not too early to begin thinking about participating in the activities of the NoVA section in 2020. Contact the new Chair or attend an ExCom meeting to discuss your ideas for activities.

Upcoming Events

The best way to stay informed of local activities is to visit the NoVA website’s pages  https://r2.ieee.org/nova/events/ that lets you search for events of interest or https://r2.ieee.org/nova/calendar/ that provides a list of the next 2 months’ events.

Note that if you have trouble getting to events that interest you (and who doesn’t have trouble commuting in the DC area!), many events are broadcasted via WebEx and you can attend virtually. You must register and under Special Instructions request WebEx login information.
