Section Report

Last month began with the elegant ambiance, engaging student displays and lightning talks, excellent food, and recognition for volunteers, new IEEE Fellows, science fair and robotics winners at the National Capital Area Awards Banquet. Two weeks later 49 IEEE members from 18 states* impressed the importance of R&D funding and improved grant application and reporting efficiency to their House and Senate representatives on Congressional Visits Day. Soon after a continual stream of young visitors played the theremin and turned the hand-cranked generator in IEEE-USA’s booth at the two-day, biennial USA Science & Engineering Festival.

May kicks off with three great technical talks on high precision time synchronization, 2D material integration challenges in nanoelectronics, and Time Modulated Arrays for RFID power and data transfer in the first week. The latter is one of four distinguished lecture talks scheduled by the joint Washington DC/Northern VA Microwave Theory and Techniques chapter. There are still a few seats available for the Conference Leadership Workshop on Saturday, May 7. Then on the 11th the TAB Ad Hoc Committee on the IEEE in 2030 will host a Webcast on the “Shared Governance of the IEEE Board of Directors, Assembly and the Enterprise Board”. Audio and slides from the April 13th webcast “Constitutional Amendment and Governance Implications” are available at http://taops.ieee.org/operations/tabin2030.html (you may have to re-enter the URL after entering your username and password).

In early June you can Build An Internet of Things Weather Station that measures temperature, humidity, and pressure and is yours to keep at the first Northern VA Section hands-on workshop of 2016 in Crystal City. Volunteers are also needed to staff the IEEE-USA booth at Awesome Con in Washington, DC; interested persons should contact Chris McManes. For a complete list of IEEE events in the area and more, visit the Northern Virginia Section website http://sites.ieee.org/nova.

Acknowledgements

For planning an awards banquet that was under budget and over-the-top enjoyable we thank last year’s Washington Section Chair Carolyn Carroll and Technology and Engineering Management Chapter Chair and February’s Leadership Training organizer Doug Holly.

Congratulations

At the April Admission & Advancement Panel in Georgia, Dr. Alfred Skolnick was elevated to Life Senior Member. If you have a combined ten years of experience with at least five of significant performance you may also be eligible.   Read about and begin the process at the Senior Member Homepage, or watch for an elevation event in the section later this year.

It’s graduation time: please email nova.chair@ieee.org if you are receiving a degree in an IEEE-designated field this May or June.

Survey

The IEEE Foundation funds a variety of projects that directly benefit individuals and communities. (Designate 0.5% of eligible Amazon purchases to our philanthropic arm at https://smile.amazon.com/.) There are also other government and NGO-based humanitarian program opportunities in the Northern VA area. This month’s survey at http://ieee.fluidsurveys.com/surveys/R20049/2016-may-member-survey/ asks what type of community service has interested you in the past or would interest you in the future. Please respond by May 11th.
