The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) Philadelphia Chapter is holding a technical meeting. The topic is Electrical Substation Battery Systems. Our speaker is John Kim, Director of Industrial & Utility Markets at EnerSys. This presentation discusses technical aspects of 125 V dc battery systems used in electrical substations. Utility and traction power substations typically use 125 V dc battery systems to provide uninterrupted backup power to protective relay systems, switchgear controls, and switchyard equipment. Batteries are selected based on owners’ preferences and applications. They are sized based on the anticipated dc load profile upon a loss of power. Load profiles often include first minute equipment operation, an 8-hour loss of power, and expected switching operations to restore power. IEEE 485 is a recommended practice for sizing lead-acid batteries for stationary applications. Mr. John Kim will give a presentation on the history of batteries used in substations and today’s latest battery technologies. The vast majority of robots in use today operate in very structured environments, e.g., in factory assembly lines, and possess only those limited motion capabilities required to perform specific tasks. While these robots can outperform humans in terms of speed, strength, and accuracy for these tasks, they are no match for the dexterity of human motion. Part of a human's inherent advantage over industrial robots is due to the large number of degrees of freedom in the human body. Articulated, i.e., jointed, motion systems that possess more degrees of freedom than the minimum required to perform a specified task are referred to as kinematically redundant. In an effort to mimic the dexterity of biological systems, researchers have built a number of kinematically redundant robotic systems, e.g., anthropomorphic arms, multi-fingered hands, dual-arm manipulators, and walking machines. While these systems vary in their appearance and intended applications, they all require motion control strategies that coordinate large numbers of joints to achieve the high degree of dexterity possible with redundant systems. This talk will discuss the issues that arise when designing such strategies, frequently drawing on the use of the singular value decomposition, including the characterization of redundancy, the quantification of dexterity, and the development of efficient and numerically stable motion control algorithms that simultaneously optimize multiple criteria. Abstract: Cyber-physical systems (CPS), such as robots and self-driving cars, demand rigorous scheduling to prevent failure, where every millisecond of processing time can be critical. These systems often rely on heterogeneous computing environments, which include CPUs, GPUs, and specialized accelerators, to meet their computational needs efficiently. However, leveraging these diverse processing units to fulfill strict physical constraints remains a significant challenge, as existing scheduling solutions often fall short of addressing the complexities involved in a comprehensive manner. This talk by Dr. Mehmet E. Belviranli delves into the intricate world of creating efficient compute schedules for CPS that not only cater to their diverse computational hardware but also adhere to real-world constraints critical for system safety. We begin by examining the role of neural network (NN) inference in CPS, exploring strategies to balance energy consumption, latency and throughput by distributing the layers of NN across different accelerators. We then introduce a novel, end-to-end framework that integrates physical constraints, heterogeneous computational resources, and latency considerations into a cohesive mixed-integer linear problem, demonstrating through case studies how this approach yields optimal scheduling solutions under varied conditions. Understanding how these models represent textual content and how they learn these representations still raises multiple research questions. In this talk, I will start from an observation that small models are less efficient than expected. I will show that language models relying on the Transformer architecture tend to produce vector representations that are not isotropically distributed in space. This anisotropy is linked to the way in which these models are learned, which leads to the frequency of the tokens taking a preponderant place in their representation. I will show that this effect has negative consequences on the ability of small models to train satisfactorily (“performance saturation”) but does not seem to affect larger models. I will then describe a new approach for training language models intended to avoid the undesirable effects of this prevalence of frequency information. The resulting “headless” models display a number of advantages over standard models, including on downstream performance. Bio: Benoît Sagot is a computer scientist specialized in natural language processing (NLP). He is a Senior Researcher (Directeur de Recherches) at INRIA, where is heads the INRIA research project ALMAnaCH in Paris, France. He also holds a chair in the PRAIRIE institute dedicated to artificial intelligence, and currently holds the annual chair for computer science in the Collège de France. As the needs for sensing the physical world to support detection, tracking, AR/VR and slew of other applications increase, the use of communications waveforms for sensing is becoming more attractive and is likely to emerge as one of the main features in NextG development. In this talk we discuss key challenges in measurement science and modeling approaches for advanced communications and sensing going forward. We will review the main building blocks for joint communications and sensing in terms of efficient spectrum use, higher frequency bands and the use machine learning. The millimeter-wave and terahertz bands hold the promise of significant bandwidth and speed due to large swaths of untapped spectrum. In addition, as massive data volumes are being collected, analyzed, and delivered, communications and sensing systems have become too complex to develop, manage, and operate. The insights that are “mined” from the data using Machine Learning (ML) techniques have become standard practice. In this presentation we highlight three emerging technologies that appear to be truly disruptive; that is, they are likely to have such a large impact that they will change the way theoreticians and practitioners think about and accomplish manufacturing and process control. These technologies are Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC), Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and Open Process Automation (OPA). Economic MPC (EMPC) is a relatively new technology that combines economic optimization with Model Predictive Control. This unification of closed-loop scheduling, economic optimization, and dynamic control provides a new platform for viewing and analyzing manufacturing problems. Reinforcement Learning (RL) is a Machine Learning (ML) technology in which a computer agent learns, through trial and error, the best way to accomplish a particular task. It is likely that DRL will take over some of the more mundane tasks involved in managing manufacturing systems, such as tuning of PID controllers, mitigating disturbances, and recovering from process upsets. Open Process Automation (OPA) will allow manufacturers, whose innovations have been constrained for decades by the limitations of closed, proprietary systems, to experience the benefits of open, interoperable, resilient, secure-by-design automation systems. This will be made possible by the development of the consensus-based Open Process Automation Standard (O-PAS) by the Open Process Automation Forum (OPAF). Abstract: The built environment has a data problem. The buildings, cities, water treatment plants, and other human-made systems produce more data now than ever before, opening new possibilities of using data to optimize operation, reduce energy consumption, predict performance, and identify faults. However, the complexity, heterogeneity, and high degree of churn of these systems makes it expensive and difficult to develop software for them. Models, control sequences, data analytics, and other software-based solutions must often be rewritten from scratch for each environment in which they will be deployed. The process of discovering and accessing data is further exacerbated by the lack of standardized structured representations of built environment systems. These challenges significantly impede the adoption of data-driven sustainable practices at societal scale. This talk will explore the use of semantic knowledge graphs to normalize descriptions of the built environment, specifically smart buildings, and reduce the cost of developing and deploying data-driven software in these settings. First, I will describe how ontologies can constrain knowledge graphs to produce useful abstractions of complex cyber-physical systems, as typified by the Brick ontology for smart buildings. Elements of this work are being adapted into new knowledge graph standards for buildings. Next, I will show how knowledge graphs enable novel programming models for "portable software" where programs can adapt their own operation to individual environments, based on queries against the knowledge graph. The talk will also show how these emerging use cases for knowledge graphs contrast with prevailing approaches towards knowledge graph maintenance and management and give rise to new methods for specifying and repairing knowledge graphs. Guest Lecture Focus Innovations in robotics are now present in many aspects of human endeavour, from robotic vacuum cleaners to autonomous battlefield drone swarms. Alongside the intended effects of these innovations are some emerging, unintended adverse consequences. Legal and political processes exist in part to prevent and mitigate such harms. This presentation offers a systematic analysis of the emerging routes by which applications of embodied artificial intelligence—robotics—elicit public policy responses. It develops a typology that classifies robotics applications according to how they interact with individual humans, large-scale human populations, and specific physical settings; and whether the robots operate alone, in swarms, or in integrated cyberenvironments. Each case interacts with public policymaking processes in different ways, spanning tort liability law, regulatory codes and standards, and policies for assessing and managing risk. Clear roles emerge for voluntary standards, international collaboration among governance bodies, professionals cross-trained in robotics and public policy, and institutions that effectively anticipate emerging problems. The widely felt vibrations from the recent M 4.8 earthquake in New Jersey has many people wondering: where do earthquakes occur and what do we need to understand about future earthquakes and their potential impacts? In this talk, we aim to address these questions. We will describe where past earthquakes have occurred in the United States and their association with faults and other tectonic features. You will learn about current approaches to earthquake forecasting and seismic hazard analysis, how seismic shaking varies across the country, and ways that earthquakes cause damage through ground shaking, ground failure, aftershocks, and even tsunamis. We will review the recent M 4.8 - 2024 Tewksbury, New Jersey Earthquake and what we can learn from this east coast seismic event.
