The software defined radio (SDR) is the modern evolution of the hardware approach to radio communications that had dominated recent technology. Discrete components formerly implemented tuned circuits, amplifiers, oscillators, mixers and detectors to provide analog modulation and demodulation. Even though vacuum tube electronics gave way to transistors and integrated circuits, the components of the radio remained discrete. However, the advent of digital modulation and application specific integrated circuits has resulted in an SDR in which all but the front end of the receiver and the back end of the transmitter could be accomplished with digital signal processing software. This Mini-Workshop presents the progression of the configuration and the availability of inexpensive SDRs that, while only capable of reception, can still provide an experience in wireless technology. The common mode choke is a critical component in electromagnetic interference filtering. The magnetic material selected is commonly overlooked and is often not evaluated against application requirements. This discussion investigates the relationship between magnetic material properties and filtering performance. Wilkes IEEE Engineering Olympics At Wilkes University, the Wilkes IEEE Student Chapter hosts an Engineering Olympics for local area high schools to compete in engineering challenges centered around the four engineering challenges at Wilkes University. Each school will be bringing 8 students, where each challenge will have two student per school to complete it. These four engineering areas are Electrical, Mechanical, Environmental, and Civil Engineering. The events are created by Wilkes IEEE Members and other Engineering Students at Wilkes University who have experience in those fields or are majoring in those fields. Micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) have been significant enabling technologies in the ‘More-than-Moore’ paradigm. They have not only directly led to the realization of numerous sensors, actuators, and communication devices in semiconductor industry, but also tremendously facilitated advances in transducers and precision instruments in exploratory research and cutting-edge metrology. When combined with advanced materials, such as SiC, GaN, other related materials, and their heterostructures, MEMS/NEMS transducers are also highly attractive for applications at high temperature, and in harsh and even extreme environments, including exposure to various radiation conditions. In this presentation, I will introduce the fundamentals of radiation effects on solid-state micro/nanomechanical structures, and the important experimental techniques for probing and quantifying such effects. I will then focus on discussing our multidisciplinary team’s collaborative research thrusts (with the ISDE at Vanderbilt University and other collaborators) and recent progress on studying radiation effects of gamma-ray, X-ray, protons, and energetic heavy ions upon various MEMS/NEMS transducers, including switches and multimode resonators with different geometries and dimensions, and including devices made of Si, SiC, GaN, Ga2O3, and 2D semiconductors. Finally, based on the findings, we shall discuss challenges, opportunities, and future perspectives of advancing MEMS/NEMS for emerging applications in space and other radiation environments. Metal halide perovskite solar cells might be deployed as single junctions or in tandems that could consist of wide bandgap perovskites paired with silicon, copper indium gallium dye selenide or a narrow-bandgap perovskite. Modules might be made with singulated cells that are connected by wires or ribbons or in a monolithically integrated architecture made with several laser scribes. Researchers often discuss the efficiency, stability under standard operating conditions and cost of the various options when making the case that one approach is the most attractive. These factors are indisputably important, but there are other factors that do not get as much attention, but could end up determining which approach is the best one. We will discuss reverse bias degradation that can occur when a panel is partially shaded and comment on which architectures are likely to be the most resistant to this type of degradation. We will discuss why some architectures are likely to have higher yield than others and point out that laser scribing along with metal vias could introduce degradation mechanisms that are not seen in the cells that are frequently put through accelerated lifetime testing.
