VTS: Crashworthiness of Transit Railcars: The Evolution and Future of Standards
May 8, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Since about the year 2000, the transit industry began looking at Crash Energy Management (CEM) as the primary mechanism to improve crashworthiness, departing from simple strength-based specifications that dominated the industry since crashworthiness first became a concern. As we have moved to CEM, and incorporated more performance-based specifications, the industry continued to introduce new vehicle designs that drove a re-evaluation of current CEM standards. The standards for crashworthiness continue to evolve as vehicles have become longer, standard couplers are replaced by articulated connections, anti-climbers are integrated with energy absorption devices, and mixed-mode of operation poses new challenges. We look at how standards are changing to keep up.
