IEEE Northern Virginia (NoVA) Section Newsletter – October 2019

Student activities are important to the IEEE. For this reason, the section’s Student Activities Chair and its Student Representative are members of the Executive Committee. By working closely with engineering students of today, we hope to inspire future IEEE membership by demonstrating the important benefits of being an IEEE member.

The Northern Virginia section has been working closely with the student branch of George Mason University (GMU). GMU IEEE student branch strives to provide opportunities for students to explore new technologies and pursue their creativity in the fields of engineering. Some activities put on by the student branch sponsored by the NoVA IEEE chapter include officer training, a career fair, and professional industry speakers.

In the upcoming calendar year, the IEEE NoVA section will look to expand and support more activities with the student branch of GMU. These future activities will look to forge a strong connection between current students and industrial professionals. We also hope to establish student branches at other local schools. Student leaders and a willing faculty advisor are prerequisites for this effort. Please contact me at nova.chair@ieee.org if you have information that will help us make student branches available to more of the engineering students in the area.

Section News

The fall is one of the times of the year when the chapters hold many sessions. Please check the list below for one that fits your technical interest.

I regret to inform our members that a long time NoVA Section member and volunteer, Emily Sopensky, passed away last week. Emily was the spark and the driving force that worked to see RFID become a Council. Her obituary can be found at https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/washingtonpost/obituary.aspx?fhid=3060&n=emily-sopensky&pid=194030089

Volunteering

IEEE NoVA is still seeking volunteers to be nominated for the elected officer and director positions discussed last month. Please contact me at nova.chair@ieee.org to learn more about these roles in the organization or to volunteer to be nominated for one of them.

Upcoming Events

The best way to stay informed of local activities is to visit the NoVA website’s pages https://r2.ieee.org/nova/events/ that lets you search for events of interest or https://r2.ieee.org/nova/calendar/ that provides a list of the next 2 months events.

Note that if you have trouble getting to events that interest you (and who doesn’t have trouble commuting in the DC area!), many events are broadcasted via WebEx and you can attend virtually. You must register and under Special Instructions request WebEx login information.

The events currently scheduled for next few months include:
