Rescheduled for Jan 30 Atomic Clocks – Quantum theory in action for 80 years and counting.
This event has been rescheduled for January 30, 2024. Atomic clocks are the silent heartbeat that operate quietly in the background for everything from data centers, to GPS, to financial trading, to cell phone networks and air traffic control. At the core of each clock are atoms, ions, or molecules, that transition between quantum states when bombarded with photons in the form of light or microwaves. In this webinar we will discuss the quantum principles involved, how they affect the clock stabilities, and recent advances in clock technology. dinner(fee): 6:30pm. Join IEEE Documentary Night: Adele Goldberg, An Oral History. We will introduce IEEE Oral Histories with special guest speaker Dr. Mary Ann Hellrigel of the IEEE History Center. Then we will watch videos with breaks for discussion. Today's Oral History: Dr. Adele Goldberg with video segments from her oral history conducted by the Computer History Museum as well as a video created for her induction into the Women in Technology Hall of Fame by Workforce Innovation, Trust, and Influence (WITI). Dr. Hellrigel will highlight portions of Goldberg’s oral history recorded by Janet Abbate in 2002 which is now part of the IEEE History Center’s Women in Computing Oral History Collection. This oral history has the most unique page visits for the previous 365 days among all IEEE Oral Histories of women. Dr. Goldberg began her career as a researcher at Xerox, where she developed the programming language Smalltalk and managed the System Concepts Laboratory. She continued to develop Smalltalk technology as the head of ParcPlace Systems. She served as president of the Association for Computing Machinery and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from PC Magazine in 1990 (IEEE). Electric Field imaging and dynamics by using Pockels effect in CdTe Radiation Detectors
The internal electric field plays a fundamental role in radiation detectors and access to it is therefore strategic. An important and widely used material in room temperature detectors is CdTe. This semiconductor exhibits the electro-optical Pockels effect, which is the linear response of the refraction index to an applied electric field. This allows to probe the electric field distribution inside the detectors with good spatial and temporal resolution. In this talk I will show recent results related to optically induced electric field perturbations. Trap-related optical doping is demonstrated in Schottky devices. Original experimental approaches enable to highlight the local perturbation on the timescale of the charge carriers transit time. A 2D Electric field imaging on such a timescale together with the visualization of free carrier motion is in progress, which is expected to provide a deep insight into charge transport mechanisms. The underlying scope of the present talk is to point out how fixed and free charges, on their corresponding timescales, can be used to control the local electric field and the optical modulation. These are general concepts in semiconductors which, with suitable materials/design, can be exploited in optoelectronics.
