CRESCENZ VA MEDICAL CENTER (NINE YEARS LATER) The flawlessly executed project won Notable Engineering Achievement Award in the Delaware Valley in 2015. This course will review the highlights of accomplishment, upon which the Award was based, and the Innovation Design of Foundations, the System Integration for the Development of the PLC Program and Operation, Maintenance and Testing Screens of the Emergency Power Supply System (EPSS) and for the Planning and Execution of the addition of the Central Utility System to the EPSS, which included the transfer of electrical feeders to 49 automatic transfer switches throughout the facility, enabling the uninterrupted operation of the Medical Center. CHIPS: An Unprecedented Opportunity What This Program Means
Dr. Michael Fritze will give his independent perspectives on what the CHIPS ((Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors) Program means for the US particularly for the microelectronics community. He will cover the motivations behind this historic semiconductor investment and articulate the planned support level for each particular area. This includes the Department of Commerce Incentives and R&D efforts and the Department of Defense Microelectronics Commons. Particular attention will be paid to the R&D parts of this legislation. He will review the goals of this legislation in strengthening the US domestic microelectronics supply chain and R&D infrastructure. Dr. Fritze will also discuss some of the key challenges of this major USG investment. Vehicular Joint Radar-Communications
Abstract: Recent interest in integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) has led to the design of novel signal processing techniques to recover information from an overlaid radar-communications signal. In this talk, we focus on the recent signal processing strategies and challenges associated with the development of sensing and communication systems that coexist with the vehicles and road infrastructure deployed in a given area. We consider a broad definition of coexistence, which covers joint communication and sensing, collaborative communication and sensing, and also interference. We consider an aspect of the coexistence paradigm where the two systems support each other beyond interference mitigation such as sensor-aided communications and communications-aided sensing. This opens up the avenue for the development of multivehicle sensor fusion strategies. We describe recent works that define topologies for combining radar and communication functionalities into the same equipment, drawing on the spectrum scarcity and possible gains from the reuse of resources. At higher frequencies, the complexity of the ISAC transceiver architectures requires the use of deep learning models for processing the received signals. In particular, we focus on the joint design of a waveform to mitigate interference, including communications-centric waveforms (OFDMA and 802.11ad), radar-centric waveforms (PMCW), or unified waveforms achieving optimal trade-offs between the two systems. Bringing privacy into the picture: new optimization goals for ML/AI in smart environments
Smart assistive environments adapt to the needs and preferences of disabled or elderly users who need help with the activities of daily living. However, the needs and requests of users vary greatly, both due to personal preferences and type of disability. As handcrafting an environment is prohibitively expensive, in recent years significant research was done in systems that use machine learning to create a predictive model of the user. Machine learning, however, typically requires large amounts of data. A stand-alone smart environment, however, only has access to the data collected from its user since it was deployed. A possible solution is to perform centralized, cloud-based learning by pooling the training data collected from multiple users. However, uploading data collected from the personal habits of elderly and disabled users create significant security and privacy concerns. In this talk, we investigate the type of data sharing necessary for learning user models in smart environments and propose several novel considerations. We point out that data sharing is only ethical if the user derives a benefit from it. This implies that the decision to share data must be periodically revisited, it is not a commitment extending indefinitely in the future. We study the data sharing decisions made by users under several machine learning frameworks: local, cloud, and federated learning. We show that most users only benefit from data sharing for a limited interval after the deployment of the system. We also investigate machine learning techniques that predict whether the user will benefit from sharing the data before the data is shared. Technical Presentation: Resilience refers to the ability of a system to cope with fatal threats and bounce back (fully or partially) from high-impact disruptions. From economic systems and organizations to various engineering systems, many sectors of modern society consider resilience as an essential requirement and/or a major design objective. Networks have been widely used as a model of numerous complex systems such as power grids, financial transaction networks, communication networks such as the Internet, command and control systems, etc. Therefore, a better understanding of the resilience of networks will be fundamental to the improved designs and/or smoother operations of a wide range of real-world systems from critical infrastructure to humanitarian aid. Dr. Al Aqqad will present a general modeling and simulation framework that he developed to quantitatively evaluate the resilience of networked systems under two types of failures: connectivity- and load-based. In filtering an noisy radar image, we can encounter the distortion overlapping with the desired information in the time–frequency. This is especially true when filtering noise in a radar or SAR image as such there is smearing in the image with the classical discrete Fourier Transform. That is there is chirps of much magnitudes overlapping with one another to where the radar image appears smeared. To compensate for this quandry, we propose a novel application of Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform in in Euclidean space that ascertains optimum angle of rotation in time-frequency domain to isolate the noise from rest of signal.
