[] On this celebratory IEEE Day, let us rejoice in the combined IEEE worldwide activities of 39 technical societies and 7 interdisciplinary councils on one side of the IEEE coin, balanced with local sections and student chapters, bringing a physical presence of IEEE to local communities. By the way, one could argue that IEEE also has a 3rd leg into humanitarian activities. These S/C span a great swathe from hardware to software, including electronic devices, solar/wind energy production, power transmission, control theory, image compression, signal processing, and computer architecture. One could say this moves from applied physics to applied math. However, this session drills down to predominantly 1 of these societies, the electron device society, where the field of semiconductor materials and devices thrives. So, with the USA's Chips and Science Act to onshore semiconductor chip manufacturing, what does this mean to you and your communities. First, the Chips portion supports semiconductor companies to build or expand domestic chip production. The Science portion aims to perform workforce development to populate those factories. Studying the D-Layer of the Ionosphere is difficult due to the low plasma density that tends to occur at the bottom of the Ionosphere, necessitating relatively low frequency signals in order to probe the overhead conditions. Ionosondes, the sensors typically used to probe the Ionosphere, mostly bottom out at 1MHz and, due to the need to operate across a wide bandwidth, their antennas are very insensitive at those frequencies. My goal is to build a passive collection system utilizing local MF stations (i.e. WDAO at 1.21MHz) as transmitters to collect long-term data on ionospheric conditions in the D- and bottom of the E-layer. The problem is twofold: 1) the reflection path is expected to be HIGHLY lossy so there will be a strong direct path signal and a weak reflection path signal of interest 2) the extremely low frequency of the signals necessary make miniaturizing the antenna system difficult, especially if (as expected) we will need to operate across multiple stations and frequencies over the course of the day. My current plan is to set up an array of ~5x crossed wire-wrapped ferrite loop antennas as elements in conjunction with a variable capacitor to tune. Generative AI refers to a category of artificial intelligence models that are designed to generate new content, such as text, images, audio, or other types of data. Probably the best known example of generative AI is ChatGPT, the fastest consumer application to hit 100 million monthly active users. Generative AI models use machine learning algorithms to learn patterns and structures from existing data and then produce new data that is similar in style or content to what they have been trained on. In this presentation, I will start with a tutorial on various approaches to generative AI. Next I will talk about projects in our group at the TU Delft on deep generative models. I will briefly present novel kinds of deep generative models that we are developing in our team. Next I will explain how we are designing such models for rainfall nowcasting, where we integrate physical laws into the deep generative models. Over 600 million people lack access to the electricity grid. This form of energy poverty disproportionately afflicts those living in developing countries, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia. Closer to home, tens of thousands of households, mostly on tribal lands are without grid electricity. Achieving universal electrification through grid extension is optimistically decades away, and in many rural areas may never occur. This talk describes approaches to providing off-grid electricity solutions in the form of renewable energy-powered mini-grids, microgrids, energy kiosks, and solar home systems. Dr. Louie will draw upon his experiences in Zambia and the Navajo Nation to explain the technology, development approaches, barriers and opportunities for rural electrification. Conformal Integration of antennas with solar panels has wide applications, from small spacecraft, Mars rovers, to self-powered wireless sensors. It is particularly beneficial when the surface real estate is a major challenge, such as a CubeSat. A strategic integration not only reduces the development cost, promotes a robust communication link, but also increases the mission capacity by allowing more science instruments to be mounted on the CubeSat. This lecture covers different conformal antenna designs for solar panel integration, from UHF to Ka band. It includes antennas integrated under solar cells, around solar cells, and optically transparent antennas integrated on top of solar cells. It also covers low gain and high gain design. The high gain design mainly focuses on reflectarray antenna, which may be beneficial to those who wishes to study the subject. As these antennas are integrated with solar panel, a unique and complex subsystem, effects of solar cells on the antenna and vice versa need to be analyzed and quantified. The lecture presents analysis of a typical space-certified solar cell, extracted model, experimental set-up to quantify the interaction between solar cells and the integrated antennas. CONSOL is one of the largest underground U.S. coal producers, located just south of Pittsburgh in Canonsburg, PA. Ironically, the transition to renewable energy sources like wind and solar energy rely heavily on coal as it will be a critical part of the steel and concrete used producing wind turbines, transmission lines and other items needed to get power to consumers. Plus, it will be much longer than people realize, if ever, that renewables can handle the baseload to meet our country’s energy needs. Coal currently represents 35% of the power produced in the world and approximately 15% in the United States. CONSOL created a public education campaign called Not So Fast that addresses this issue. It is fact-based (with references cited) and focuses on how the transition to renewables will be slower than most people think and may result in many unintended consequences. As the demand for high-performance computing continues to surge, driven largely by advances in artificial intelligence and other data-intensive applications, the semiconductor industry faces growing challenges in meeting these requirements. Traditional approaches, constrained by the slowing of Moore’s Law and the end of Dennard Scaling, are proving inadequate in addressing the exponential increase in compute and bandwidth needs. Silicon Photonics is emerging as a key technology to overcome these limitations. By leveraging the unique properties of silicon for optical communication, Silicon Photonics can offer significant improvements in data transmission speeds and energy efficiency compared to conventional electrical interconnects. This technology has the potential to reduce latency and power consumption, making it a compelling solution for next-generation data centers and high-performance computing systems. Advanced Packaging Technologies are equally critical in this evolving landscape. As chips become more complex and power-hungry, innovative packaging solutions such as chiplets and advanced integration methods are essential to manage power consumption and thermal issues while enhancing performance. Talk abstract: Cellular network security is more critical than ever, given the increased complexity of these networks and the numbers of applications that depend on them, including telehealth, remote education, ubiquitous robotics and autonomous vehicles, smart cities, and Industry 4.0. In order to devise more effective defenses, a recent trend is to leverage machine learning (ML) techniques, which have become applicable because of today advanced capabilities for collecting data as well high-performance computing systems for training of ML models. Recent large language models (LLMs) are also opening new interesting directions for security applications. In this talk, I will first present a comprehensive threat analysis in the context of 5G cellular networks to give a concrete example of the magnitude of the problem of cellular network security. Then, I will present two specific applications of ML techniques for the security of cellular networks. The first application focuses on the use of natural language processing techniques to the problem of detecting inconsistencies in the "natural language specifications" of cellular network protocols. The second application addresses the design of an anomaly detection system able to detect the presence of malicious base stations and determine the type of attack. Then I'll conclude with a discussion on research directions. The Internet of Things (IoT) is perceived as a collection of smart, connected devices with the ability to send and receive data; “internet” encapsulates connectivity and “things” are devices (electronic or mechanical) that can be adapted toward connectivity. There is an alternative perception of IoT, as a design methodology that facilitates interoperability and connectivity of physical systems. Edge computing is a strategy for localized analysis of data, ahead in the pipeline of powerful data center- or cloud-based post-processing. This workshop provides an introductory-level exposure of the IoT framework and expands it with edge computing ideology via practical and hands-on exposure. The attendees will be exposed to the IoT framework using sensors, IoT automation and connectivity in a “microLab” environment that includes the Raspberry Pi (single-board computer) and Python programming language. Abstract: Semiconductor industry is on the path towards one trillion-dollars in revenue by 2030, however, carbon emissions from semiconductor processes are expected to rise at a much steeper rate than the industry scaling. Enabling sustainable growth by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption and increasing reliance on renewable energy for operations will be critical to keeping our fabs running. Companies within the semiconductor ecosystem recognize this need and are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of their products. A systems approach is essential to determine the real contributions from the process chambers, sub-fab equipment, and facility level utilities consumption towards the overall emissions from chipmaking, which will guide how best to improve the environmental performance of wafer fab equipment. Based on the lifecycle impact of process gases and the energy consumption patterns of a manufacturing tool, we define the most effective emission reduction strategies. Improved abatement of residual gases and intelligent use of energy & resources based on the tool utilization, can reduce emissions significantly. However, the architecture of the current wireless networks is often fixed, and the optimization tasks are defined to cope with specific and identified challenges and services. Hence, the prevailing manual and predetermined optimization and configuration tasks are no longer appropriate for future networks. We are working on resolving such issues by proposing a framework inspired by theories and tools inspired by complex systems science, focusing on the impact of network topology on the system's (i) information representation and transfer, (ii) robustness, and (iii) self-synchronization capabilities. We will also look into how the IoT is creating a new structure of awareness – a cybernetic one – upon physical processes and discuss how industries of different kinds are expected to join soon this revolution, leading to the so-called Factories of the Future, also called Industry 5.0. We will then discuss different problems in this space and how to solve them resorting to tools from mmWave, AI, and semantic communications. Millimeter wave automotive radars are highly reliable in all-weather environments and are indispensable for both advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles. The presentation will highlight recent advancements that continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in automotive radar technology for fully autonomous driving. Key topics include the use of sparse arrays synthesized with multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar technology to achieve enhanced angular resolution, innovative waveform designs for mitigating mutual interference between automotive radars, and high-resolution direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation from a single snapshot. We will also address the challenges of applying MIMO radar theories in automotive contexts, including the use of model-based deep neural networks for high-resolution DOA estimation and the integration of domain-knowledge-guided deep learning in radar perception for autonomous vehicles. Distributed control is a classical research topic. While a rich theory is available, some assumptions such as availability of subsystem dynamics and topology and the subsystems following the prescribed controllers exactly have proven difficult to remove. An interesting direction in recent times to get away from these assumptions has been the utilization of learning for control. In this talk, we consider some problems in control design for distributed systems using learning. Our core message is that utilizing control-relevant properties in learning algorithms can not only guarantee concerns such as stability, performance, safety, and robustness that are important in control of physical systems, but also help with issues such as data sparsity and sample complexity that are concerns during the implementation of learning algorithms. A major hurdle in developing next-generation systems for high-performance applications and industries that require handling large, secure data - such as System-in-Package (SiP) and System-on-Chip (SoC) - is the absence of low-latency, high-bandwidth, and high-density off-chip/chiplet/core interconnects. There are three waves of Artificial Intelligence. The first Wave of AI is Crafted Knowledge, which includes rule-based AI systems. The second wave of AI is Statistical Learning, which includes machine becoming intelligent by using statistical methods. The third wave of AI is contextual adaptation. In the third wave, instead of learning from data, intelligent machines will understand and perceive the world on its own, and learn by understanding the world and reason with it. Neurosymbolic AI, which combines neural networks with symbolic representations, has emerged as a promising solution of the third wave of AI. In this talk, I will share my journey from internet of things to incremental learning and transfer learning to neurosymbolic AI; then I will present my perspective on the emerging area with focus on neurosymbolic transfer learning, neurosymbolic reinforcement learning, and neurosymbolic AI verification and validation (testing and evaluation).
