This talk will introduce a general engineering audience to Directed Energy (DE) weapon technologies and their application in modern warfare. The Directed Energy (DE) community finds itself at a point of convergence between the state of the art of various forms of DE-weapon technology, and a growing number of emerging and asymmetric threats that those DE weapons can reasonably address in a more cost-effective manner than existing, and thus far conceived, conventional kinetic weapons. Guided rockets, artillery, mortars, and the proliferation of unmanned systems for both intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and strike, are a few of the many evolving threats that may be addressable by currently available DE capabilities, both high-energy lasers (HEL) and high-power microwave/radiofrequency (HPM/HPRF) systems. This immergence of addressable threats, the low cost per engagement, and a deep electrical magazine, allows for DE capabilities to reduce engagement costs and enhance force protection. We are now operating under a new paradigm for DE weapons, where the warfighters and acquisition community need answers on how, and not if or when, DE weapons are to be used. So, this now begs the questions of: How do we operationalize DE weapons? How might such weapons be used? and What are their implications for modern warfare? Foundation models such as GPT-4 have garnered significant interest from both academia and industry. An outstanding feature of such models is so-called emergent capabilities, including multi-step reasoning, instruction following, and model calibration, in a wide range of application domains. Such capabilities were previously only attainable with specially designed ML models, such as those using carefully constructed knowledge graphs, in specific domains. As the capabilities of foundation models have increased, so too have their sizes at a rate much faster than Moore's law. The training of foundation models requires massive computing power. For instance, training a BERT model on a single state-of-the-art GPU machine with multi-A100 chips can take several days, while training GPT-3 models on a large multi-instance GPU cluster can take several months to complete the estimated 3*10^23 flops. This talk provides an overview of the latest progress in supporting foundation model training and inference with new AI accelerators. It reviews progress on the modeling side, with an emphasis on the transformer architecture, and presents the system architecture supporting training and serving foundation models. He is on the Board of the UN Foundations' Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, co-led the World Economic Forum discussion in Davos that led to the EU privacy regulation GDPR, and was one of the UN Secretary General's "Data Revolutionaries" helping to forge the transparency and accountability mechanisms in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. He has received numerous awards and prizes such as the McKinsey Award from Harvard Business Review, the 40th Anniversary of the Internet from DARPA, and the Brandeis Award for work in privacy. With the rapid development of Internet of Things, a vast number of small, low-cost, and low-power mobile electronic devices, such as radio frequency identification tags and wireless sensors, will become integral parts of our society. Supplying electrical power to these devices wirelessly would eliminate/relieve their battery life limitation. Since wireless power delivery must be dedicated to the designated receivers in space, it is inevitable to employ one narrow electromagnetic beam as the carrier of wireless power toward each mobile device. The retro-reflective beamforming technique has excellent potential to accomplish efficient wireless power transmission in the context of Internet of Things and can track multiple mobile devices, generating wireless power to the devices accordingly. The primary merit of retro-reflective beamforming technique is that wireless power transmission is augmented by radar tracking. Specifically, wireless power transmission is initiated by pilot signals broadcasted from wireless power receiver(s); and in response to the pilot signals, a wireless power transmitter delivers directional microwave power beams to the receiver(s). Results collected in our research demonstrate that the retro-reflective beamforming scheme enables microwave power beams to follow the location of mobile wireless power receiver(s) dynamically when the receiver(s) broadcast pilot signals periodically. Gamification in education promotes motivation, engagement, and learning gains. This presentation will discuss the use of gamification in engineering focusing in on the development, testing, and application of a biomedical engineering laboratory-based escape room. Recreational escape rooms have grown in popularity as an enjoyable immersive experiences in a unique environment to practice communication and collaboration. Some educators are taking advantage of these qualities in escape rooms to challenge students to demonstrate course knowledge in a low-risk and fun learning environment. The development, iterative design process, and application of an educational escape room tailored for upper-level undergraduate BME students will be described. This escape room allows students to showcase technical skills and problem-solving within a laboratory environment, utilizing tools such as mechanical test frames, ultrasound, spectrophotometers, and more. Equally as important, students are exposed to a unique opportunity to practice teamwork and communication. The effectiveness of this activity has been analyzed using student self-reported data and reflections, instructor observations, and survey results. Some of the main takeaways are that participants are engaged and empowered to successfully escape even without external motivators like a grade. Whether successful or not, students unanimously emphasized the significance of effective communication during group tasks and the importance of assigned roles. In addition, there is support to show that this immersive experience not only enhances their learning but also boosts their confidence. Chalcogens are elements in group 16 of the periodic table, while chalcogenides are a combination of chalcogens elements that exhibit phase-change properties. Phase change chalcogenides (PCCs) are materials that undergo reversible phase changes between amorphous and crystalline states with the application or removal of heat. My research focuses on the characterization of the phase change chalcogenides (Tellurium-Te, Selenium-Se, Germanium-Ge, Antimony-Sb) deposited on nanostructure, exploring potential applications in optical data storage and non-volatile memory while ensuring advanced thermal heat management systems. Silicon nanostructure has unique transfer properties, and integrating PCMs enhances the thermal management of the PCM. The research goal is to understand the interactions between PCMs and silicon nanostructures to improve thermal heat dissipation and the life cycle of the phase change from amorphous to crystalline without destroying the fundamental atomic structure. Advancing Large-area Crop Mapping with Satellite Data Satellite remote sensing is transforming global agricultural monitoring. Crop maps from satellite data are essential for crop monitoring systems and crop modeling projects. Generating high-resolution crop maps is a research area of significant potential. The Landsat and Sentinel series of satellites, with 10-30 m spatial resolution, sub-weekly revisit frequency, free data policy, and standardized pre-processing, represent the best available datasets for crop mapping over large areas. This talk presents a multi-scale mapping approach with satellite Analysis Ready Data (ARD) generation, machine learning, probability sampling and in situ data collection as critical components. The approach can simultaneously produce crop area estimates with uncertainty estimates and crop classification maps with validation accuracy. Crop mapping results at national and continental scales over the United States, Canada, China and South America are illustrated.
