This seminar discusses an advanced approach for the multilevel drive system control using Model Predictive Control (MPC) applied to the dual T-type advanced topology. The study is performed while the converter feeds an open-ends induction motor (OEIM). The MPC scheme is developed to balance the DC link capacitors, reduce/mitigate the (common-mode voltage) CMV, and control the machine torque simultaneously. The proposed technique for MPC reduces the number of redundant switching states used in computations without affecting the operating voltage vectors. This reduces the computational time substantially. In addition, the proposed control strategy mitigates the weighting factors tuning problem. MATLAB simulation results for the proposed drive system under different case studies are presented. Hardware experimental setup for the proposed converter is built, tested, and verified. A comparison between experimental and simulation results is presented. Current-induced spin-orbit torques (SOTs) are of interest for fast and energy-efficient manipulation of magnetic order in spintronic devices. At the meeting the speaker will review bias-field-free SOT switching in a single perpendicular magnetic layers with an engineered vertical composition gradient. The vertical structural inversion asymmetry induces strong intrinsic SOTs and a gradient-driven Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (g-DMI), which breaks the in-plane symmetry during the switching process. The phenomena could have implication on development of ultrafast SOT memory arrays. Traumatic events alter the body and the brain. Severe intrusive memories are a perpetuating clinical symptom in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this talk, Dr Nil Gurel of Meta Reality Labs, will discuss a novel, electroceutical intervention that stimulates the vagus nerve non-invasively, with no side effects. Her research has combined noninvasive sensors and signal processing to develop digital biomarkers to guide PTSD treatment. The results were found to be sufficiently compelling by the FDA to accelerate the use of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) as a treatment for PTSD through the Breakthrough Device Program, which speeds the development of medical devices for the more effective treatment of life-threatening or irreversibly debilitating conditions. Systematic resampling is the most popularly used resampling method in particle filters. This paper seeks to further the understanding of systematic resampling by defining a formula made up of variables from the sampling equation and the particle weights. The formula is then verified via SPARK, a software verification language. The verified systematic resampling formula states that the minimum/maximum number of possible samples taken of a particle is equal to the floor/ceiling value of particle weight divided by the sampling interval, respectively. This allows for a creation of a randomness spectrum that each resampling method can fall within. Methods on the lower end e.g. systematic resampling have less randomness, thus, are quicker to reach an estimate. Although, lower randomness allows for error by having a larger bias towards the size of the weight; having this bias creates vulnerabilities to the noise in the environment e.g. jamming. Conclusively, this is the first step in characterizing each resampling method. This will allow target-tracking engineers to pick the best resampling method for their environment instead of choosing the most popularly used one. The recent emergence of agile software-controlled waveform generation provides an opportunity to dramatically improve radar system performance. This talk describes an integrated algorithm for estimating the state of a surveillance region and using this estimate to design future radar transmissions. Our fully adaptive radar (FAR) resource management (RM) approach emulates the perception-action cycle (PAC) of cognition. The FAR-RM PAC includes a perceptual processor that performs multiple radar system tasks and an executive processor that allocates system resources to the tasks and decides the next transmission of the radar on a dwell-by-dwell basis. The executive processor uses an information theoretic objective function to select the collection of waveforms that is expected to maximally improve the perception on the next cycle. We illustrate our approach in simulation using a model of an agile multi-mode radar whose mission is tracking and classifying multiple target aircraft. This work focuses on path planning for autonomous agents, leveraging multiple sensing domains to provide navigation solutions in contested environments. The emphasis is on mutli-objective optimization, finding optimal path costs that minimize uncertainty in the goal region.  The algorithm developed is based on the Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) probabilistic planning algorithm, but extends into the belief space to plan over uncertainty. The Rapidly-exploring Random Belief Alt-Nav Graph (RRBANG) leverages the probabilistic guarantees of the RRT-based algorithms, ensuring the properties for probabilistic completeness and asymptotic optimality. The algorithm is designed to be agent and measurement model agnostic, but specifically how complementary navigation techniques obtain their measurements when developing plans within a complex environment. The algorithm provides an offline, initial plan for an agent given a priori world information. There are several, significant planned avenues for advancement, targeting the algorithm itself, extending to implement real-time dynamic re-planning, as well as benchmarking against other belief space planning (BSP) algorithms. Initially commercialized in the 1980s, cellular communications technologies have iterated through many “generations,” from analog to digital, from voice-centric to data-centric, from “circuit” to “packet,” from “phone” to “smartphone.” Now in its fifth generation, “5G,” cellular technologies have come a long way in terms of speed, latency, mobility, availability, reliability, security, and overall sophistication, as well as increasing adoption and reliance by consumers, enterprises, and institutions alike. This presentation will briefly overview the evolution of cellular technologies from inception to 5G, survey the drivers that are likely to influence the continued development of cellular communications for 5G, 6G, and beyond, and touch on various ideas and technologies that may be introduced into future generations of cellular communications and related standards in response to these drivers. Radar offers some unique capabilities compared to other sensing phenomenologies. For example, radar can operate at long ranges, during the day and night, and in most weather conditions. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) enables formation of 2D and 3D images of ground scenes for a wide array of military and commercial applications. In this talk, Dr. Linda Moore will discuss current challenges in SAR signal processing, including the challenge of applying machine/deep learning techniques to SAR automatic target recognition (ATR). Measured and synthetic SAR data has been made publicly available by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and can assist in developing new techniques for today's SAR signal processing challenges. This talk will introduce a general engineering audience to Directed Energy (DE) weapon technologies and their application in modern warfare. The Directed Energy (DE) community finds itself at a point of convergence between the state of the art of various forms of DE-weapon technology, and a growing number of emerging and asymmetric threats that those DE weapons can reasonably address in a more cost-effective manner than existing, and thus far conceived, conventional kinetic weapons. Guided rockets, artillery, mortars, and the proliferation of unmanned systems for both intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and strike, are a few of the many evolving threats that may be addressable by currently available DE capabilities, both high-energy lasers (HEL) and high-power microwave/radiofrequency (HPM/HPRF) systems. This immergence of addressable threats, the low cost per engagement, and a deep electrical magazine, allows for DE capabilities to reduce engagement costs and enhance force protection. We are now operating under a new paradigm for DE weapons, where the warfighters and acquisition community need answers on how, and not if or when, DE weapons are to be used. So, this now begs the questions of: How do we operationalize DE weapons? How might such weapons be used? and What are their implications for modern warfare? Foundation models such as GPT-4 have garnered significant interest from both academia and industry. An outstanding feature of such models is so-called emergent capabilities, including multi-step reasoning, instruction following, and model calibration, in a wide range of application domains. Such capabilities were previously only attainable with specially designed ML models, such as those using carefully constructed knowledge graphs, in specific domains. As the capabilities of foundation models have increased, so too have their sizes at a rate much faster than Moore's law. The training of foundation models requires massive computing power. For instance, training a BERT model on a single state-of-the-art GPU machine with multi-A100 chips can take several days, while training GPT-3 models on a large multi-instance GPU cluster can take several months to complete the estimated 3*10^23 flops. This talk provides an overview of the latest progress in supporting foundation model training and inference with new AI accelerators. It reviews progress on the modeling side, with an emphasis on the transformer architecture, and presents the system architecture supporting training and serving foundation models. Bio: Professor Alex 'Sandy' Pentland directs MIT Connection Science, an MIT-wide initiative, and previously helped create and direct the MIT Media Lab and the Media Lab Asia in India. He is one of the most-cited computational scientists in the world. Forbes declared him one of the "7 most powerful data scientists in the world" along with Google founders and the Chief Technical Officer of the United States. He is on the Board of the UN Foundations' Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, co-led the World Economic Forum discussion in Davos that led to the EU privacy regulation GDPR, and was one of the UN Secretary General's "Data Revolutionaries" helping to forge the transparency and accountability mechanisms in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. He has received numerous awards and prizes such as the McKinsey Award from Harvard Business Review, the 40th Anniversary of the Internet from DARPA, and the Brandeis Award for work in privacy. Recent invited keynotes include annual meetings of OECD, G20, World Bank, and JP Morgan. The addition of a non-uniform magnetic field can increase the efficiency of a solar cell by manipulating the movement of the charge carriers within the silicon. This manipulation can increase the current produced by the solar cell which helps to increase the power and efficiency of the solar cell. This theory can be tested by measuring a solar cell’s output current and voltage both with and without the presence of a non-uniform magnetic field. A higher output power means the efficiency of the solar cell is increased.
