This is a weekly session of the CIT Summer Series, with David A Fisher presenting Why Software Fails and Why AI cannot Help : It was once widely believed that computers would enhance the speed, reliability, and applicability of human deductive reasoning in the physical and social sciences, much as motorized vehicles (e.g., cars, trains, airplanes) have enhanced the speed, reliability, and applicability of human manual abilities in transportation. Yet, 60 years later, computers can be used confidently only for paperwork tasks, analysis of regularly structured data, and simple process control applications. Complex software rarely satisfies user needs, is untrustworthy and difficult to maintain, and largely opaque to its users. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods including heuristics, machine learning, and statistical methods are in opposition to sound deductive reasoning. This presentation explains certain practical and logical impediments to computer enhancement of human deductive reasoning, the deductive limitations of modern programming languages, the role of AI, and provides some promising alternatives. This is a weekly session of the CIT Summer Series, with David Alan Grier presenting The Generations of Computing and the Coming Data Age : If you look carefully at the development of computing, you can see clear generational cycles. These cycles are marked by a sharp change of technology and a group of young leaders taking advantage of those changes. There is clearly a period of 20 years in which these leaders rise to prominence in the field before passing command to the next generation. We can point to the mainframe generation of the Fifties, the Software/PC Generation of the 70s, the Internet/Mobile Generation of the 90s. We are clearly nearing the end of the 90s cycle and need to start asking what follows and who will be the next generation. This talk considers the extent to which data will be the next driving technology and the extent to which we are already shifting towards the data generation of leaders. It is challenging to build and test Field Robots. Project timelines, tuning issues, budgetary restraints, and even crashes (both literal and figurative) can cause setbacks. In order to enable more developers to work in parallel and reduce the risk of an expensive and/or dangerous failure, SKA Custom Robots and Machines employs a number of tactics, including systems engineering, breaking out individual subcomponents for testing and electrical / software integration, building standalone prototypes of subsystems, using a smaller, lower cost robot to act as a surrogate for a full scale system, and simulation. This talk aims to explore some of these development methodologies, when they are appropriate, and how to employ them at a high-level. Distinguished Lecture Presentation by Garth d'Abreu of ETS-Lindgren Interest in reverberation chambers has grown in the last 15 years, almost in step with the increasing complexity and, in some cases, vulnerability of electronic systems. The severity of this test environment, especially for immunity testing, is due to the inherent attributes of a well-designed chamber. There are many parameters that can be optimized to suit the type of testing to be done, ranging from the traditional EMC tests to the more recently developed sensitivity and radiated power tests performed on wireless communication devices. Mr. D’Abreu discusses the importanat aspects of the design, validation, and testing of reverb chambers, including a look at some of the pitfalls, while drawing on his years of experience in designing chamber installations for EMC and wireless applications. Electrical insulation design is an important area in the development of electrified aircraft. This presentation will first discuss insulation design challenges associated with high voltage electrical stress, as well as environmental stress under fight-like conditions. The second part will focus on electric field management in the electrical insulation to prevent partial discharge and disruptive discharges. The rapid development of the nano-electronic industry over the past decades has relied on the process of transistor scaling to provide significant improvements to transistor performance at a reduced cost. Multiple directions have been pursued to extend the semiconductor industry's growing trend, including searching for new material systems, designing new transistor structures, demonstrating new functionalities, and developing new applications. The semiconductor chip has two main elements: active devices (i.e., transistors) and interconnects. As for active devices, new 2-D materials (MoS2, WS2, BN, etc.) are all aggressively studied to realize high energy efficiency and memory/logic functions for system compactness. Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, researchers have focused on layer-structured materials and their applications in electron devices. This talk will present the current status and possible application developments in nanoelectronics and nanomaterials. A brief introduction is discussed to the general nanoelectronics and 2D materials for device applications. The technical challenges of 2D materials are discussed. This talk will introduce various technologies that are based on 2D materials and will be discussed possible applications. In addition, traditional silicon-based devices and the nanotechnology-enabled high-performance device will be discussed. Abstract: Radar offers some unique capabilities compared to other sensing phenomenologies. For example, radar can operate at long ranges, during the day and night, and in most weather conditions. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) enables formation of 2D and 3D images of ground scenes for a wide array of military and commercial applications. In this talk, Dr. Linda Moore will discuss current challenges in SAR signal processing, including the challenge of applying machine/deep learning techniques to SAR automatic target recognition (ATR). Measured and synthetic SAR data has been made publicly available by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and can assist in developing new techniques for today's SAR signal processing challenges. Available data sets will be associated with relevant technical challenges and examples of related IEEE published work will be highlighted. This is a weekly session of the CIT Summer Series, with Jon Peddle presenting The History of Visual Magic in Computers: How Beautiful Images are Made in CAD, 3D, VR and AR : If you have ever looked at a fantastic adventure or science fiction movie, or an amazingly complex and rich computer game, or a TV commercial where cars or gas pumps or biscuits behaved liked people and wondered, “How do they do that?”, then you’ve experienced the magic of 3D worlds generated by a computer. 3D in computers began as a way to represent automotive designs and illustrate the construction of molecules. 3D graphics use evolved to visualizations of simulated data and artistic representations of imaginary worlds. In order to overcome the processing limitations of the computer, graphics had to exploit the characteristics of the eye and brain, and develop visual tricks to simulate realism. The goal is to create graphics images that will overcome the visual cues that cause disbelief and tell the viewer this is not real. Thousands of people over thousands of years have developed the building blocks and made the discoveries in mathematics and science to make such 3D magic possible, and The History of Visual Magic in Computers is dedicated to all of them and tells a little of their story. It traces the earliest understanding of 3D and then foundational mathematics to explain and construct 3D; from mechanical computers up to today’s tablets. Several of the amazing computer graphics algorithms and tricks came of periods where eruptions of new ideas and techniques seem to occur all at once. Applications emerged as the fundamentals of how to draw lines and create realistic images were better understood, leading to hardware 3D controllers that drive the display all the way to stereovision and virtual reality. Maps the history of the techniques behind science fiction movies, complex and rich computer games, and TV commercials capable of making cars, gas pumps and biscuits behave like human beings.
