The increase in renewable penetration in power grids has led to more frequent system oscillation occurrences. Some, if left unattended, will deteriorate to oscillatory instability that causes severe damages. While fast power system variations can be captured by Phasor Measurement Units (PMU), critical oscillations are often blended with common grid dynamics and a data management method is necessary to differentiate the two. Currently, the widely-adopted real-time oscillation event detection methods are mostly empirical-based, which present a large number of false alarms and omissions even with constant tuning and tweaking. Therefore, to enhance notification accuracy and facilitate control room functions, a real-time oscillation detection methodology based on Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) was innovated and deployed in AEP. The proposed methodology fits millions of historical PMU data into a bi-variate probability model by superposing Gaussian kernel functions derived at each data point. The standard deviations of those Gaussian kernel functions are determined via Maximum Likelihood Cross Validation (MLCV), in which the optimum fitness between the probability model and the historical PMU data are achieved. A severity index is then created for each observation based on the cumulative probability function. A cutoff value on the severity index is subsequently customized for every PMU signal via heuristic training involving historical event data. Outliers, picked based on the cutoff severity index, would hence be visualized on scatter plots to delineate alarm thresholds and finalize alarm settings. The KDE-based oscillation detection was able to flag critical oscillations previously overlooked by the empirical-based alarm. Moreover, it has decreased false notification rate from 50% to below 6% since deployment in 2020. Despite of evolving changes in AEP’s footprints, the false alarm rate has been maintained around 5%, which demonstrates the robustness of the proposed methodology. The KDE-based oscillation detection allows control room personnel to capture threatening oscillations at an early stage, enhancing situational awareness and preventing system-wide instability. Furthermore, with post-event studies performed on captured events, preventive measures could be planned accordingly to accommodate today’s power grid to increasing renewable penetrations. In this talk, we focus on the recent developments toward distributed integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). We consider a broad definition of coexistence, which covers ISAC, collaborative communications, and sensing with interference. Toward fully realizing the coexistence of the two systems, optimization of resources for both new/futuristic sensing and wireless communications modalities is crucial. These synergistic approaches that exploit the interplay between state sensing and communications are both driving factors and opportunities for many current signal processing and information-theoretic techniques. In addition, a large body of prior works considers colocated ISAC systems while distributed systems remain relatively unexamined. Building on the existing approaches, the tutorial focuses on highlighting emerging scenarios in collaborative and distributed ISAC, particularly at mm-Wave and THz frequencies, highly dynamic vehicular/automotive environments that would benefit from information exchange between the two systems. It presents the architectures and possible methodologies for mutually beneficial distributed co-existence and co-design, including sensor fusion and heterogeneously distributed radar and communications. The tutorial also considers recent developments such as the deployment of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) in ISAC, 5G systems, passive internet-of-things, and ISAC secrecy rate optimization. This tutorial aims to draw the attention of the radar, communications, and signal processing communities toward an emerging area, which can benefit from the cross-fertilization of ideas in distributed systems. David Bondurant reviews 50 years of Semiconductor and Computer Technology History, using his personal life story to provide background to highlight the driving forces behind the $52B CHIPS Act, passed in 2022. Following the invention of the transistor in 1947, the US semiconductor industry led the world in innovation in semiconductors from 1950 through 1980, as Moore’s Law shrunk transistors and increased the complexity of chips. In 1975, Japan's government began investing in semiconductor technology with their largest firms. Their focused DRAM program rapidly captured 50% of the semiconductor market and drove most US DRAM companies from the market. The US responded with the Very High Speed Integrated Circuits (VHSIC) program in 1980. By the end of the 1980s, the Berlin Wall fell and the US maintained its leadership in supercomputers. In 1983, Korea joined the world competition, beginning development of DRAM products. By 1993, they had overtaken the Japanese and have become the leading supplier of DRAM. In the 1990s, they developed non-volatile NAND Flash products and became the leading supplier of all commodity memory products by the 2000s. During the same time period, Taiwan entered the semiconductor foundry market focused on highly integrated logic chips, investing in increasing costly factories. By the 2000s, they became the leader in silicon foundries and the US went increasingly fabless, with companies such as Apple, Qualcomm, AMD, and Nvidia depending upon offshore foundries. In 2014, China launched its $150B Big Fund to become competitive in the world market. By 2022, a focused Chinese effort in 5G wireless communication has made them a world leader in this technology and they are gaining ground in memory and logic. The most semiconductors are no longer being manufactured in the US. Taiwan and Korea have gained technical leadership. As Moore’s Law hits the wall, new Beyond Moore technologies in semiconductor process and packaging require us to maintain our semiconductor leadership so that we keep computer leadership and security. Matt Francis reviews the details of the $52B CHIPS Act. The Act subsidizes and expands existing facilities to increase onshore supply, returns leading edge manufacturing to the US, reinforces our traditional strengths in chip design and equipment, and grows the US Workforce to support the expanded manufacturing. The Environmental Center has exhibits related to environmental conservation and remediation. The building itself was constructed from recycled and environmentally benign materials. Adjacent to the structure is a lovely natural garden comprised of native plants. Lunch is scheduled during 1-2 PM with the Environmental Center docent host and members of the Ohio Valley Astronomy club. After lunch, we will tour the center in parallel with having a viewing session with the astronomy club and solar telescope. As sky conditions permit through the afternoon, there will be viewing of the Sun with the club's solar telescope. Solar activity is nearing an 11-year maximum; so there should be a lot to look at. The astronomers will also show us an adjacent, small historical observatory. It was built by a wealthy Wheeling family for an astronomy-loving son and contains, a Zeiss refracting telescope with documents related to history of astronomy. The 2023 Atlantic Tropical Outlook was recent updated by experts prompting much curiosity regarding what to expect for this year's hurricane season. The power system industry is shifting towards a new digitalization era to better manage risk within volatile energy commodities, increase customer engagement, and enhance efficiency via grid optimization. Data analytics play a vital role in this transformation and, as such, different measurement architectures have been used and implemented to facilitate data capturing process and supervisory control at the generation, transmission, and distribution levels. This seminar will briefly review the recent outcomes of some smart grid challenges addressed by novel prediction techniques. At the generation level, decomposition techniques have been applied to handle the inherent uncertainty in short-term wind power prediction. At the transmission level, dynamic thermal line rating prediction has been studied as a viable solution to reduce congestion and utilize the actual capacity of the line. Considering the high inclusion of phasor measurement units at the transmission level, cutting-edge methods have been proposed to address stability status prediction of the grid following a contingency. Finally, at the distribution level, real-life data obtained from advanced metering infrastructure have been used for load prediction and customer segmentation.
