Digital Substations and the IEC 61850 Standard

November 21, 2023 @ 21:30 - 22:30

David G. Williams P.E. and substation services Senior Engineer at FirstEnergy Corporation, will be presenting a 1-hour webinar on a new technology for Digital Substations, the IEC 61850 suite of standards. A 1-hour PDH certificate will be provided to attendees for Professional Engineer Continuing Education. IEC 61850 is a grouping of standards defining engineering and communication protocols for (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_electronic_device) at (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_substation). The abstract data models defined in IEC 61850 can be mapped to a number of protocols. Current mappings in the standard are to (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacturing_Message_Specification) (MMS), (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOOSE) (Generic Object Oriented System Event), and SV (Sampled Values) / SMV (Sampled Measured Values). Precision Time Protocol (PTP) IEEE 1588 / IEC-61850-9-3 is one more protocol that provides time synchronization supporting SV. These protocols operate on (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP/IP) and native switched (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet) networks existing as substation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAN) to obtain the necessary response times below four milliseconds for protective relaying. Focus in the webinar will be on an overview of these protocols and how they allow protective relaying installations to operate with far less copper wiring while improving safety with electrical isolation.
