As the EV technology for the driving train entered the phase of maturity with many superior performances, significant progress in battery technologies ushed in the era of electrical vehicle proliferation. Battery-powered electric vehicles (BEV) are now in price parity with internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, even being more competitive. Many countries/regions now have aggressive mandates towards zero-emission to combat global climate change. A major remaining obstacle is the availability of ultra-fast charging required for long-haul driving and ubiquitous charging for everyday driving. We will discuss the challenges facing ultra-fast charging and available solutions coming on the horizon. We will provide a new thinking in achieving ubiquitous charging infrastructure by leveraging existing and readily-available technologies. For autonomous vehicles, wireless power charging provides a path forward. The newly-founded IEEE Transportation Electrification Council (TEC) is providing much-needed leadership in the technical space to help pushing for ubiquitous charging infrastructure on a global scale. Abstract: Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is a relatively new bistatic radar remote sensing technique which uses GNSS navigation satellites like GPS and Galileo as its transmitter and provides its own receiver to measure the navigation signal after it is scattered from the Earth surface back into space. Modifications to the signal caused by the scattering process contain information about the surface properties that can be estimated by analysis of the receiver’s measurements. The detectable properties include surface roughness, near-surface wind speed over water, soil moisture, inland water boundaries, and surface height. A GNSS-R type of radar is particularly attractive because a radar receiver alone is generally much smaller, lighter, lower power and cheaper than a conventional radar that also includes a transmitter. As a result, GNSS-R systems can fly on smaller satellites and constellations of them can be flown to provide more frequent global coverage. This seminar will provide an overview of the science and applications possible with a spaceborne GNSS-R system, using the NASA CYGNSS constellation of eight small satellites as an example. Numerous follow-on GNSS-R missions have either been launched or are currently in development, and these will also be discussed. Bio: Chris Ruf is the Fredrick Bartman Collegiate Professor of Climate and Space Science at the University of Michigan. He received the B.A. degree in Physics from Reed College and the Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, and has previously worked at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Penn State University. Prof. Ruf’s research interests involve microwave remote sensing of the Earth environment, with a focus on ocean and atmosphere applications and sensor technology development. He is Principal Investigator of the NASA Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System mission. Prof. Ruf has served on the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Committee on Earth Science and Applications from Space and on their 2006 and 2016 Earth Science Decadal Survey Panels. TIERA – Development of a Mobile Robot for Assembly and Repair in Hazardous Environments TIERA is a versatile, mobile robot that can conduct repair and assembly operations in hazardous areas. The functionality and composition of the robot are defined by the tasks we expect it to perform and the harsh environments we expect it to work in. We considered many environmental factors in our design including radiation, corrosion, toxicity, explosion, biohazard, high voltage, and extreme temperatures. High mobility was another key design feature for enabling the traversal of hazardous environments. This contrasts with most industrial robots, which are usually stationary and consist of a jointed arm attached to a fixed surface. We had to carefully consider how to make it possible for an expert operator to remotely control the robot from a safe location, and subsequently designed the sensory, communication (WiFi and 4G), virtual reality, and haptic feedback systems required for intuitive teleoperation. Additional key features of TIERA include: • Fanless embedded computer controlling most of the robot’s hardware • Robotic manipulators and tools perform various repair tasks • Vision system allowing operator to receive video feedback from robot’s cameras • Sensors for getting information about the surrounding environment. The main feature of TIERA’s central control system is integration of NI Linux Real-Time and CompactRIO with the flexibility and features of ROS, which generated many novel features for our robot. After introducing a use case (consumption power scheduling) for which studying this interplay is fully relevant, we will survey the main approaches in this area, which include pure LLM-based approaches (e.g., to deal with math word problems) and combined approaches. Both limitations and promising solutions will be discussed. Application to radio resource management and to telecommunications more generally will also be addressed. In the last part of the talk, connections between LLMs and game theory will be discussed. Speaker: [] Samson Lasaulce is a Chief Research Scientist with Khalifa University. He is the holder of the TII 6G Chair on Native AI. He is also a CNRS Director of Research with CRAN at Nancy. He has been the holder of the RTE Chair on the "Digital Transformation of Electricity Networks". He has also been a part-time Professor with the Department of Physics at École Polytechnique (France). Before joining CNRS he has been working for five years in private R&D companies (Motorola Labs and Orange Labs). His current research interests lie in distributed networks with a focus on optimization, game theory, and machine learning. The main application areas of his research are wireless networks, energy networks, social networks, and now climate change. Dr Lasaulce has been serving as an editor for several international journals such as the IEEE Transactions. He is the co-author of more than 200 publications, including a dozen of patents and several books such as "Game Theory and Learning for Wireless Networks: Fundamentals and Applications". At this AdCom meeting, awards will be presented to local science fair winners from the Washington Section. Following the meeting, the winners will be invited to a celebratory lunch with the AdCom as the section's guests. All chapter officers in the Washington Section (including joint chapters) are welcome to attend this meeting and present an update on their chapters' activities. For example, a chapter officer may give a short presentation on their chapter's plans or provide slides beforehand in case they cannot attend. IEEE MOVE Global is an emergency response program dedicated to assisting natural disaster relief efforts with short-term communication and power solutions. The program provides essential services such as internet access, mobile phone charging, and lighting to help people stay connected during disasters. When not deployed for emergency relief, IEEE MOVE Global engages in community outreach and STEM education. The IEEE MOVE India program, initiated by the IEEE India Council Region 10 in collaboration with state disaster agencies and NGOs, focuses on disaster response efforts in India. This talk will highlight MOVE India's activities, including disaster awareness and STEM workshops conducted across the country. Distributed Machine Learning for FPGAs in the Cloud Machine Learning (ML) is a growing area in both research and applications. Trends include larger and larger ML models and the interest in getting results from ML with low latency and high throughput. To address these trends, researchers are increasingly looking at accelerators (such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), especially those that are directly connected to the network to achieve low latency access to data. In this talk, I will introduce the Open Cloud Testbed (OCT): https://octestbed.org/ OCT is available to researchers who are interested in conducting cloud research with accelerators. We provide GPUS, FPGAs, and AI engines from AMD. The FPGAs and AI engines are directly connected to the network. I will discuss experiments on using OCT for distributed ML using multiple network connected FPGAs. Specifically I will present results for running Resnet50 inference on the imagenet dataset. [] 100-300 GHz Wireless: transistors, ICs, systems By Professor Mark Rodwell, UCSB IEEE-MTT Distinguished Microwave Lecturer We describe the opportunities, and the research challenges, presented in the development of 100-300GHz wireless communications and imaging systems. In such links, short wavelengths permit massive spatial multiplexing both for network nodes and point-point links, permitting aggregate transmission capacities approaching 1Tb/s. 100-300GHz radar imaging systems can provide thousands of image pixels and sub-degree angular resolution from small apertures, supporting foul-weather driving and aviation. Challenges include the mm-wave IC designs, the physical design of the front-end modules, the complexity of the back-end digital beamformer required for spatial multiplexing, and, for imaging, the development of system architectures requiring far fewer RF channels than the number of image pixels. We will describe transistor development, IC design, and system design, and describe our efforts to develop 140GHz massive MIMO wireless hubs, and 210GHz and 280GHz MIMO backhaul links. Abstract: Our group's research focuses on nanostructured semiconductor materials and devices, utilizing bottom-up MOCVD growth and top-down nanofabrication approaches to push the boundaries of semiconductor technology. Our goal is to create new device architectures that can transform the fields of electronics, photonics, quantum technologies, and potentially medicine. In this talk, I will present two of our pioneering nanofabrication platforms that aim to address the increasing complexity in dimensional scaling and integration. Firstly, we developed an unorthodox anisotropic etching method, metal-assisted chemical etching (MacEtch), enabling damage-free fabrication of semiconductor nanostructures with unprecedentedly high aspect ratios and versatility for high-performance electronic and photonic devices. Some of the examples that I will use are MacEtch-enabled β-Ga2O3 FinFETs and damage-free microLEDs. Secondly, I will discuss our 3D self-rolled-up membrane (S-RuM) nanotechnology platform that has been used for extreme miniaturization of passive electronic components, such as inductors, transformers, and L-C resonators for radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs). We believe that these innovative platforms hold the potential to unleash unprecedented levels of performance and functionality in semiconductor materials and devices. Team members: Dan String, Jordan Smith, Justin Wade Advisor: Dr. Wei Wei Team 2: Project Title: Stomata, Green Toolkit Abstract: The Stomata project introduces a fresh, innovative approach to tackling urban climate change by pairing sustainable ecosystem design with a modular, cost-effective environmental monitoring device. Our team, focusing on the computer and electrical engineering side, is responsible for building and programming this device to support nature-based climate solutions. Urban areas face serious climate-related challenges—poor air quality, rising temperatures from the heat island effect, and a loss of biodiversity. There’s a clear need for solutions that not only monitor environmental conditions but also support ecological restoration in a scalable, affordable way. Unfortunately, most current technologies fall short in integration, usability, or cost. That’s where Stomata comes in. Our device measures key environmental factors like air quality, soil moisture, pH, and electrical conductivity, with real-time data visualized through a mobile app. It’s designed to be easy to replicate, making it a strong candidate for deployment in other urban areas or academic settings. Ultimately, this project lays the groundwork for smarter, more accessible environmental monitoring and offers a practical solution that we’re piloting right here at the University of Cincinnati. While the versatility and application varies upon industry and industry needs, one challenge is known across all industries; that is, being able to create a durable robot while being affordable. This project aims to design an innovative all-terrain autonomous guided vehicle, or rather all-terrain AGV with the ability to navigate both an indoor and outdoor environment in addition to being cost effective. The project encompasses crucial designs such as adding four tracks and a suspension for the outdoor environment, adding a camera to track objects and overall placement of the robot’s location, and using a RPLIDAR sensor to map out the given surroundings. Alongside this, we’ll be using a NVIDIA Jetson Nano using Python to control the robot in addition to a remote to ensure that the robot can move by manual operation alongside being autonomous. Ensuring the robot is affordable, durable, and flexible given the environment it’s surrounded by is crucial for the robot, and the project aims to offer a sustainable solution for any industry while being able to perform tasks alongside being able to carry light objects within any environment. The Morton Contest began in 1959 after a $2000 gift to the then Lehigh Valley Section of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE). C.S. Brangan of Philadelphia donated the money in memory of his close friend, Walter B. Morton, who was the chief electrical engineer of PP&L Company and who had a distinct interest in student activities through the AIEE. Brangan stipulated that the money was to provide a prize for a contest to be held among the undergraduate colleges with AIEE student branches in the Lehigh Valley Section; at the time of the gift, those colleges were Bucknell University, Lafayette College, and Lehigh. Brangan specified that the money was to last for 20 years, so there was one prize awarded in 1959 of $100. The Lehigh Valley section has continued to support the contest beyond the initial 20 years, and starting in 2012 prizes were raised to $500 for first place, $300 for second and $100 for third place. In 2021 the Lehigh Valley Section raised the prize values to $550 for first place, $350 for second, and $150 for third. The branch of the first place prizewinner also gets a plaque for display. The Lehigh Valley section now consists of four branches: Lafayette College, Lehigh University, Wilkes University and the University of Scranton. Bucknell was removed from the Lehigh Valley section in 1963 but was grandfathered into contest participation by the Section Executive Committee, however has not participated in several years making four total participating branches in the contest.
