Special Presentation by Dr. Hao Zhou and Chengming Hu (McGill U., Canada) Hosted by the Future Networks Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AIML) Working Group Date/Time: Thursday, September 5th, 2024 @ 6 PM EDT Topic: Large Language Models (LLMs) for NextG Wireless Networks: Fundamentals and Case Studies in Network Optimization and Prediction Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) have received considerable attention recently due to their outstanding comprehension and reasoning capabilities, leading to great progress in many fields. The advancement of LLM techniques also offers promising opportunities to automate many tasks in the communication networks field. After pre-training and fine-tuning, LLMs can perform diverse downstream tasks based on human instructions, paving the way to artificial general intelligence (AGI)-enabled 6G. This talk will first present a comprehensive overview of LLM fundamentals and applications to wireless networks, discussing wireless-specific LLM training, fine-tuning, and practical deployment. Then, it will present two case studies on specific network optimization and prediction problems, showing detailed prompt and algorithm designs along with simulation results. Speakers: Dr. Hao Zhou is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the School of Computer Science, McGill University. He completed my PhD degree at University of Ottawa, Canada, from 2019 to 2023. His research focuses on the intersection between machine learning, optimization, and networked systems, especially for 5G/6G wireless networks and power systems. Dr. Zhou is dedicated to developing novel machine learning algorithms to address a series of optimization problems in networked systems, including resource allocation, computational task offloading, energy efficiency enhancement, energy management and trading, network security, etc. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers, including reputable journals in IEEE Communication and Power Energy Societies, e.g., IEEE Wireless Communications, IEEE Trans. Smart Grid, and IEEE Communications Survey & Tutorials. He has received the Best Paper Award at the 2023 IEEE ICC conference, and the 2023 IEEE ComSoc CSIM TC Best Journal Paper Award for his contributions to transfer learning-enabled wireless network slicing. Dr. Zhou’s PhD Thesis entitled “ML-Based Optimization of Large-Scale Systems: Case Study in Smart Microgrids and 5G RAN” won the 2023 Faculty of Engineering’s Best Doctoral Thesis Award at University of Ottawa. Chengming Hu is currently a Ph.D. candidate at McGill University, Canada. The lecture will include metrics of cognition such as dementia provide the first clues to neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease. In response to the exponential growth of global data generation, IEEE has initiated two groundbreaking projects stemming from the IEEE/TA Data Strategy Ad Hoc committee. These initiatives harness IEEE's vast dataset resources to accelerate research and development, facilitate global data sharing, and create value for members and customers worldwide. The first project, IEEE DataPort, is a searchable repository of research datasets. Key features include: · Ability to link datasets to authors' IEEE publications · Open upload system for researchers · Metadata and quality screening process · Assignment of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to datasets Dataport has a rapidly growing user base of over 8.5 million, with 20,000 new users daily. The second project is an AI/ML-powered search and knowledge engine that utilizes Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) technologies. The pilot program, "AskIEEE," allows users to pose questions in natural language and receive answers derived from IEEE's comprehensive information database. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) Philadelphia Chapter is holding a technical meeting. The topic is Continuous Monitoring of Substation Assets Using Thermal Imaging. Continuous thermal monitoring of critical substation assets is essential to identify potential failure points and protect aging components. Remote monitoring with thermal imaging systems gives you highly accurate data for condition-based maintenance. Fiber optic sensors are proven to be an effective hot spot monitor and controller for power transformers. Bond meters and megohmmeters provide precise measurements and superior reliability in rugged outdoor environments. Radiation resistant photovoltaics (PV) for lunar surface applications has been increasingly important for application on the lunar surface. Graphene-based Schottky diodes with semiconductor various radiation resistant layers is a promising choice for lunar PV due to (i) graphene high photon transparency (ii) and radiation resistant semiconducting layers such as GaN. We propose a G/n-GaN Schottky diode where the metal is replaced by graphene grown on top of a thin oxide layer resting on the semiconductor. Photoexcitation of carriers occurs in both graphene and the semiconductor regions. the oxide layer prevents or reduces recombination of photo-carriers. we propose a model where photo-generated electrons cross the PV device in both directions (from Gr to the semiconductor and vice versa) via two mechanisms by (a) thermionic emission and (b) quantum tunneling. We outline the method of obtaining net current densities (thermionic and tunneling). Tunneling transmission and thermionic carrier escape and current are outlined along with the advantage of high current density generation in the harsh lunar surface environment. Magnetism is capable of manipulation of objects both large and small, near and far, visible and invisible. This talk will focus on two ways in which magnetic devices are being developed for manipulation. More specifically, I will present two examples in which we are using magnetism to design versatile devices with applications to haptics (manipulating tactile surfaces) and communications (manipulating electromagnetic waves). First, we will consider what magnetic features are required to make reconfigurable haptic interfaces, capable of giving the user the sensation that they are feeling what they are seeing on a visual display; and reconfigurable communication systems, capable of tuning their frequency of operation real-time. Here, I will present our self-assembled magnetic nanostructures with large magnetic moment and anisotropy as a potential solution to both applications. For haptic interfaces, true 3D fidelity in a tactile display requires extremely flexible materials that can also be programmed real-time to physically illustrate what is visually displayed on the screen. I will present how our magnetic elastomer composites can be used to achieve such fidelity. For microwave communication systems, high frequency resonances need to be widely tunable to enable adaptive filtering and more interference-resilient communications. I will present how our high magnetic anisotropy materials can provide adaptability of such sharp filters at frequencies in the tens of gigahertz. The projects discussed will illustrate the impact of magnetism on the design of broadly versatile devices to ameliorate both technology and society in the future. [] On this celebratory IEEE Day, let us rejoice in the combined IEEE worldwide activities of 39 technical societies and 7 interdisciplinary councils on one side of the IEEE coin, balanced with local sections and student chapters, bringing a physical presence of IEEE to local communities. By the way, one could argue that IEEE also has a 3rd leg into humanitarian activities. These S/C span a great swathe from hardware to software, including electronic devices, solar/wind energy production, power transmission, control theory, image compression, signal processing, and computer architecture. One could say this moves from applied physics to applied math. However, this session drills down to predominantly 1 of these societies, the electron device society, where the field of semiconductor materials and devices thrives. So, with the USA's Chips and Science Act to onshore semiconductor chip manufacturing, what does this mean to you and your communities. First, the Chips portion supports semiconductor companies to build or expand domestic chip production. The Science portion aims to perform workforce development to populate those factories. Where will this new workforce come from and what do you need to do to prepare for your future? This talk aims to take a critical look at the opportunities before you in the semiconductor industry. Studying the D-Layer of the Ionosphere is difficult due to the low plasma density that tends to occur at the bottom of the Ionosphere, necessitating relatively low frequency signals in order to probe the overhead conditions. Ionosondes, the sensors typically used to probe the Ionosphere, mostly bottom out at 1MHz and, due to the need to operate across a wide bandwidth, their antennas are very insensitive at those frequencies. My goal is to build a passive collection system utilizing local MF stations (i.e. WDAO at 1.21MHz) as transmitters to collect long-term data on ionospheric conditions in the D- and bottom of the E-layer. The problem is twofold: 1) the reflection path is expected to be HIGHLY lossy so there will be a strong direct path signal and a weak reflection path signal of interest 2) the extremely low frequency of the signals necessary make miniaturizing the antenna system difficult, especially if (as expected) we will need to operate across multiple stations and frequencies over the course of the day. My current plan is to set up an array of ~5x crossed wire-wrapped ferrite loop antennas as elements in conjunction with a variable capacitor to tune. Generative AI refers to a category of artificial intelligence models that are designed to generate new content, such as text, images, audio, or other types of data. Probably the best known example of generative AI is ChatGPT, the fastest consumer application to hit 100 million monthly active users. Generative AI models use machine learning algorithms to learn patterns and structures from existing data and then produce new data that is similar in style or content to what they have been trained on. In this presentation, I will start with a tutorial on various approaches to generative AI. Next I will talk about projects in our group at the TU Delft on deep generative models. I will briefly present novel kinds of deep generative models that we are developing in our team. Next I will explain how we are designing such models for rainfall nowcasting, where we integrate physical laws into the deep generative models.
