The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) Philadelphia Chapter is holding a virtual meeting using Zoom. The topic is Transit Traction Power Cables: Replacement Guidelines. Dr. Kasim Korkmaz, Associate Professor in Civil Engineering and Construction Management at Eastern Michigan University, is our guest speaker. The transit industry uses insulated cable for traction power supply and negative return cables between traction power substations, tie switches, and points of delivery to the vehicles. Third rail systems use jumper cables to provide continuity of power around third rail gaps and expansion joints. The conductor insulation system used for traction power cables, as well as for lower voltage power distribution and signal/communication systems, typically has a specified life of 30 years. Many of the transit systems in the United States are that age or older with original cables still in service. Many cables within transit tunnels have had failures because of the water penetration through and around the cable insulation, causing damage to the insulation and corrosion of the copper conductor. In some subway tunnels, the conduits themselves have degraded to the point where they cannot be cleaned out and reused for their original purpose. Transit systems have experienced cable fires and system-wide closures due to the degradation of traction power cable insulation. In recent years, major storms affecting the United States have inundated transit tunnels with fresh and contaminated water and exacerbated cable lifecycle concerns. Dr. Korkmaz will discuss the causes of cable damage and the replacement criteria for traction power cables. Attendees may apply for 2.0 PDH upon completion of webinar. The topic is Traction Power Wayside Energy Storage Technology Feasibility Analysis: A Broad Review. Mr. Benjamin (Ralph) Stell, P. E., Associate and Senior Engineer, STV Incorporated, is our guest speaker. The project economics of Wayside Energy Storage Systems (WESS) intended for energy conservation purposes only are heavily dependent on current and future electric rates. This is most likely the primary reason why there have been so few WESS implementations dedicated to energy conservation in the USA to date. And, with the exception of supercapacitor-based WESS, most of these implementations have been experimental pilot-type projects. Several pilot type WESS projects have been successful, but the application of these systems solely for energy and demand savings has been limited in the USA primarily due to unacceptably long paybacks due to high capital cost coupled with low electric rates. Mr. Stell will discuss available wayside energy technologies that offer promise for pilot-type projects. This presentation provides an overview of wayside energy storage and recovery technologies such as supercapacitors, storage batteries, flywheels, and reversible substations that can be used on traction power systems. Mr. Oleg Goureev, Component and Systems Manager, and Mr. Martin Bussiere, Business Development Manager, Rail Segment North America, ABB Electrification Products, are our guest speakers. ABB will give a presentation on their latest DC rolling stock high-speed circuit breaker called DCBreak. It is a medium-voltage high-speed bi-directional DC circuit breaker for rolling stock application power supply up to 1800 V, 1500 A, with a breaking capacity of 30 kA. The DCBreak circuit breaker family for rolling stock combines a small footprint, reduced weight, high flexibility and reliable operation with minimal maintenance. It is ABB’s first in a line of new products intended for the direct current railway transportation market. It is designed to high safety standards as well as relevant environmental directives and industry standards. “Powerless” – A history of our nation’s major power blackouts and description of its grid, including a focus on last year’s Texas fiasco In November 1965, the United States suffered its first major loss of electrical power, The Great Northeast Blackout of 1965. 30 million people were left in the dark, including all New York City. New York City again went dark in 1977, and again, 2004, in the largest blackout to hit the United States. Cities and states across the country have been affected at one time or another. This presentation will cover the history of major blackouts, their causes, impact and aftermath. The presentation will also describe the nation’s power grid with its three separate systems, transmission voltage levels, AC versus DC transmission, and who watches over this nation-wide grid which we all depend on 24/7. In addition, it’s been over a year since the collapse of Texas power system. Some called this catastrophe one of the worst blackouts in the nation’s history in terms of impact to those affected. We will look at just how close the grid was to total collapse and what has and has NOT been done to prevent another power disaster.
