2022 IEEE Dayton Section Student Paper Contest Information

  1. Background The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) holds an annual Student Paper Contest. The IEEE Student Paper Contest is held at each of the 10 IEEE Regions. Ohio is in IEEE Region 2. The IEEE Dayton Section Student Paper Contest seeks to prepare Dayton area IEEE students for the IEEE Region 2 contest, which has a submission deadline of April 1st each year. Regional contest winners are published in the monthly IEEE magazine, as well as on the IEEE Website in November each year.

 

  1. Purpose The purpose of this contest is to recognize and develop technical, written, and verbal communication skills. These skills are critical to successful careers. This peer-reviewed contest seeks to provide actionable feedback to contestants so students can improve their proficiency in technical communication for the professional world.

 

  1. Timetable Entrants must e-mail a PDF version of their papers to the Student Activities Chair, Mr. Joseph Natarian, Joseph.Natarian@IEEE.org. Please use the subject line: Contest Entry – 2022 IEEE Dayton Section Student Paper Attached in the header of the e-mail and give complete contact information for both the student(s) and the student branch counselor. Submissions must be received via e-mail no later than July 7, 11:59pm. Finalists whose papers are selected to be presented orally will be notified on or before July 11 by the Student Activities Chair. Presentation Time: Finalists selected present their papers the morning of July 20th at the AFIT Kenney Auditorium or virtually via a live link.

 

  1. Eligibility All entries to this contest must be authored by a student member of the IEEE, and must be enrolled in a degree program at a university. Entries authored by non-members will not be considered. To participate in undergraduate contest, all authors must be registered as undergraduate students at a university within the IEEE Dayton Section district for the current academic term. To participate in the graduate contest, the lead author must be registered as graduate student at a university for the current academic term. Multiple authors are permitted up to a limit of four (4). Valid submissions with both undergraduate and graduate student authors will be entered in the graduate contest. Any questions regarding eligibility must be directed to the IEEE Dayton Section Student Activities Chairman.

 

  1. Prizes The IEEE Dayton Section provides funds for prizes as follows: • First Place graduate/undergraduate- $100.00 • Second Place graduate/undergraduate – $75.00 • Third Place graduate/undergraduate – $50.00. In addition to monetary prizes, all winning student authors will receive a high-quality wooden plaque, engraved with the IEEE Dayton logo and the winner’s name, and free admission to IEEE NAECON 2023 Conference.

 

  1. Character of the Paper Each paper submission should cover technical and engineering aspects of a subject reasonably within or related to the areas with which the IEEE is concerned with. The work need not be original in engineering content, but should be original in treatment and concise in coverage of the author’s contribution to the subject.

 

  1. Paper Requirements All submission must adhere to the IEEE manuscript guidelines. A template for the official IEEE format can be found at the URL below: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html. The paper should be typewritten and use Times New Roman font, formatted on 8-1/2″ x 11″ paper. Pages of the document must be numbered consecutively. The Introduction, Body, Conclusions, Tables, Diagrams, and References together may not exceed 4 pages while these sections together with the Appendices may not exceed 6 pages. Judges will penalize those who exceed this length. The following is a list of the major parts of a suitable paper. • Introduction • Body of paper • Conclusions and Recommendations • References/Bibliography • Appendices The above list is intended only as a basic guide in establishing the format. The cover page (use the format described in Section 8), which contains the author(s) name(s) and the Student Branch affiliation, will be removed before the paper is transmitted to the judges. Please make sure that the cover page is a separate sheet. Contestants are strongly encouraged to bring paper copies for distribution at the time of the oral presentation.

  1. Oral Presentation The 10 to 12 highest scoring papers in the written judging will be notified by the Student Activities Chair to participate in the oral presentation. Each contestant will have 15 minutes for oral presentation and 5 minutes for a question and answer period. A timekeeper will indicate, by some suitable method, how a contestant’s time is progressing and when each of his/her prescribed time periods is completed. The Student Activities Chair will select the order of oral presentation at random.

 

  1. Judges The basis for the judging is indicated in the following sections. The winners shall be determined from the sum of written and oral scores.

 

  1. Written There will be three judges of the written papers. They will judge each of the papers independently and send their scores to the Student Activities Chair.

 

  1. Oral Three judges of the oral presentations and a timekeeper will be selected by the Student Activities Chair in conjunction with the IEEE Dayton Section Chair.
