JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Harrisburg, The School of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SSET) is recruiting a full-time Engineering Laboratory Coordinator to support the growth of engineering enrollment and research activities.  The individual hired for this position will: report to SSET Director or designee: support faculty and staff, particularly in our three engineering departments: and ensure the safe operation and maintenance of specialized equipment and facilities for research and laboratory instruction at both the graduate and undergraduate levels: and provide training to students performing approved research in the laboratories.

SSET has experienced rapid growth in the engineering programs with the hiring of six new tenure track faculty in the Fall of 2022, the launch of a new Ph.D. program in Engineering Systems, and the need to support our growing research.  Additionally, SSET anticipates increased graduate student enrollment.  With the ongoing acquisition of new equipment in the Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering laboratories for teaching and research, the increasing number of sophisticated senior capstone projects, and more complex graduate student research projects, this position will play a critical role in addressing SSET’s needs.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist faculty and students with planning labs and experiments.
  • Assist faculty, staff, and students in ensuring the safe operation of special equipment and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to students using engineering laboratory facilities.
  • Perform routine and minor maintenance on laboratory equipment, minor repairs, and calibration as required.
  • Monitor users and ensure compliance with lab policies.
  • Communicate inventory needs of lab supplies to the appropriate Program Chairs, lab supervisors, and administrative support assistants.

Typical Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering laboratory operations.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with experimental R&D environments in engineering.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Demonstrable skills in some of the following: welding, metal fabrication, casting, material testing, laboratory instrumentation, thermal/fluids experimentation, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, 3D printers, digital control, automation plus robotics & PLCs, non-destructive testing of various materials, and data-acquisition systems, software packages such as MATLAB, LabView, and CAD software.
  • Experience and training in promoting a safety culture.

Typical Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field (preferably in electrical or mechanical engineering) and five years of laboratory or related experience; OR an equivalent combination of experience and education that allows achievement of comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities.
