IEEE Northern Virginia (NoVA) Section Newsletter – May 2019

The joint IEEE NoVA and Washington annual awards banquet is rapidly approaching. It will be held at the Vienna Community Center (120 Cherry St SE Vienna, Virginia 22180) on Saturday May 11th starting at 6:30 PM. The awards banquet honors the volunteerism of our members and celebrates their achievements.

The ambience at this year’s banquet will be less formal than previous events. It will have fewer presentations and include entertainment. The price is quite modest for a three-course meal and free parking.

Section News

Please visit the NoVA section’s website (https://r2.ieee.org/nova/) for information on local IEEE and related activities. You can also access the Washington section’s website (https://r2.ieee.org/washington/) or the Baltimore sections website (http://sites.ieee.org/baltimore/) if activities in one of these locations is convenient for you. We want to make these websites useful tools for you.

Volunteering

IEEE NoVA always welcomes new volunteers. We have one-time events for which help is needed and longer-term roles that need to be filled. Let me know if you wish to explore ways to work with your fellow IEEE members.

The Young Professionals Affinity Group has developed a specific website for recruiting individuals for volunteer opportunities. These are typically one-time tasks that can require as little as several hours of effort. It is a good way for people to “try out” volunteering with the IEEE. The web site is https://uv.ieee.org/home

Upcoming Events

The best way to stay informed of local activities is to visit the NoVA website’s pages https://r2.ieee.org/nova/events/ that lets you search for events of interest, or https://r2.ieee.org/nova/calendar/ that provides a list of the next 2 months events. Events conducted by the Washington and Baltimore sections can be found at parallel pages on their websites.

Note that if you have trouble getting to events that interest you (and who doesn’t have trouble commuting in the DC area!), many events are broadcasted via WebEx and you can attend virtually. You must register and under Special Instructions request WebEx login information.

The events currently scheduled for next few months include:

Special Forums, Seminars, and Conferences

The International Test Conference (ITC) will be held this year on November 12th to 14th at the Marriott Washington Wardman Park hotel. It is the 50th anniversary of the conference. ITC is the world’s premier conference dedicated to the electronic test of devices, boards and systems-covering the complete cycle from design verification, test, diagnosis, failure analysis and back to process and design improvement. At ITC, test and design professionals can confront the challenges the industry faces and learn how these challenges are being addressed by the combined efforts of academia, design tool and equipment suppliers, designers, and test engineers.

The ITC 2019 invites NoVA and Washington Section members to participate in ITC 2019 by submitting papers and suggesting speakers. They also invite local Students to serve as Volunteers. Volunteers give one day of service at the conference. In return they get a complimentary full registration to ITC, which entitles them to attend all technical sessions, panels, and talks. It is an excellent opportunity to learn about testing from professionals, see the latest equipment, and meet people active in the field. Details can be found at http://www.itctestweek.org/

Best wishes,
