Section Chair Message

Dear IEEE NoVA Members,

April was one of the busiest months with IEEE activities in National Capital area. Special thanks to all the IEEE Scientists and Engineers who came downtown DC in a rainy Earth day, Saturday April 22nd, to participate in the March for Science (MfS) activities. Our IEEE volunteers proudly wore their IEEE T-Shirts demonstrating the IEEE objective for Advancing Technology for Humanity, carried our IEEE banner and distributed IEEE recruiting cards urging scientists to join IEEE. The March for science had 320 registered IEEE members. Most of them came with their families and joined the IEEE delegation from with IEEE NoVA Washington And Baltimore sections with MTT EDS and CIS Societies. As such the IEEE MfS is the most attended locally organized event in our area. NoVA wishes to particularly thank Pamela Abshire for her diligence in organizing the IEEE march and all the UMCP students and IEEE volunteers who helped make the march a great historic event.

The National Capital Area Annual Awards Banquet took Place on Saturday April 29th. Our Science Fair Area Winners were on site with posters and demonstrations of their winning projects. IEEE NoVA thanks the pre-University STEM activities Chairs Martin Schulman and Dan Cross-Cole for organizing the science Fairs IEEE judges and recognizing the winning students for their very amazing early electrical engineering achievements. The Students that received first place awards from the Northern Virginia Section are Ms. Siona Prasad, Fairfax County “Estimating CO2/CH4 Emissions Using Low Cost Sensors and Drone Technology” Mr. Christopher Cerne, Loudoun County “The Smartphone of the Future”; Mr. Brendan Doney, Northen Virginia “Code Conversion”; Mr. Zachary Nowak, Prince William-Manassas “Using Pattern Recognition to Improve Solution Speed for A Complex Problem” The complete list of all NoVA Science fair awards is in the attached NoVA Science Fairs Awards Document. Many thanks to returning judges Amarjeet Basra, Dan Cross-Cole, David Kane, Don Rickerson and Martin Schulman.

Congratulations to all our active society chapters’ councils and affinity group Volunteers who received awards at the awards Banquet. In addition to the chapter awards the NoVA Section Special Awards went to:

Emily Sopensky, James F. Stother Meritorious Service Award for long and distinguished service to the local membership over five years

Barry Douglass, Volunteer of the Year to recognize superior contributions during 2016

Kafi Hassan, Chapter of the Year award to Communications Society chapter to recognize superior contributions during 2016

Mr. Dan Cross-Cole, Distinguished Service Award for Individual Sustained contributions over three to five years.

Sprint Corp. and George Mason University School of Engineering, Friends of NOVA Award for Sustained support.

Our Sister Washington Section Special Awards went to:

Harvey Newman, Volunteer of the year to recognize superior contributions during 2016

Kiki Ikossi Chapter of the year award Microwave Theory and Techniques Society to recognize superior contributions during 2015

Harry Sauberman, P.E. Distinguished Service Award for Individual Sustained contributions over three to five years.

Many thanks to our NoVA awards committee, Marc Apter, Kate Duncan and Kafi Hassan for the hard work in recognizing our volunteers and warm congratulations to all the NoVA and Washington DC volunteers for their awards.

On April 10-12, 2017, the 17th Integrated Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance Systems (ICNS) Conference took place at the Westin, near Dulles airport, in Herndon VA. The conference is an international aviation conference addressing technology and policy advances. This year, ICNS emphasized the challenges of integrating unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the managed airspace and CNS challenges to facilitate that integration. Aviation experts from the industry and governments from all over the world were present. The conference was very well attended and a great success. Many Thanks to IEEE NoVA volunteers Mike Cardinale and Asim Aziz who were helping with local arrangements and registration.

Please consider attending the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) in Baltimore MD on May 28-31, 2017. It is organized by our local volunteers. The International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) 2017 is hosting a tutorial for high school students on Sunday, May 28, 2017, at the Baltimore Waterfront Marriott from 1:30-5pm. The tutorial will introduce tomorrow’s engineers to electrical engineering concepts and careers, providing an overview of the field of Circuits and Systems.

Volunteering

STEM Volunteer Opportunity

IEEE and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) need scientists, engineers, and physicians to assist K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) teachers in the District of Columbia and adjacent counties, including Loudoun County, during the 2017-18 school year.

The details of the collaboration are worked out between the teacher and the volunteer, and may involve giving demonstrations, assisting in lab experiments, lecturing on special topics, assisting with homework, etc. The hours are flexible, and volunteers attend a one-day orientation session before being assigned to schools. To see how volunteers are assisting their teachers, view the video clips at www.stemvolunteers.org.

If you are interested in helping K-12 STEM education and have time to share your knowledge with students and teachers, please send a note to bcalinge@aaas.org with your home address, or call Betty Calinger, 202-326-6629.

IEEE NoVA is organizing speakers to discuss STEM career fields for Career Day at Henderson Elementary School on Friday, June 9. If you would like to be a STEM speaker, please contact Marty Schulman at schulman@tuffmail.com.

With best regards to all,

Kiki Ikossi, Ph.D.

Chair, IEEE NoVA Section
