Young Professionals – Solar Electricity: How We Got Here and Where We’re Going

March 13, 2017 @ 11:00 pm - March 15, 2017 @ 1:00 am

Installation of solar photovoltaic modules has been increasing at phenomenal rates, 30-60% annually for a decade in the US and abroad. It is the fastest growing new generation source. One in fifty jobs created in the US in 2016 were in the solar industry.  The talk will give an overview of the cell and systems technology that has gotten us here along with the national policies that enabled unleashing this energy. Issues for the next 2 decades will be considerably different due to constraints from grid integration. The roles of module efficiency, reliability, and cost will be discussed as they impact the levelized cost of energy. Finally, integrating solar with energy storage and smart grid innovation will be crucial to providing a low carbon energy future.
