IoT-based Wireless Mobile Computing Platform for Fall Risk Prediction

Falls are major health risk with which the elderly and disabled must contend. Scientific research on smartphone-based gait detection systems using the Internet of Things (IoT) has recently become an imperative component in monitoring injuries due to these falls. Progress in gait analysis systems, the capabilities of smartphones, and the IoT are enabling the advancement of sophisticated mobile computing applications that detect falls after they have occurred. This detection has been the focus of most fall-related research; however, ensuring preventive measures that predict a fall is the goal of this health monitoring system. A thorough investigation of existing systems and using predictive analytics, I built a novel mobile application/system that uses smartphone and smart-shoe sensors to predict and alert the user of fall before it happens. I used built-in sensors in smartphones and a sensor embedded smart-shoe. The interactions between these sensors and the user resulted in distinct challenges for this work while also creating new performance goals based on the unique characteristics of this system. In addition to providing an exciting new tool for fall prediction, this work will make several contributions to current and future generation IoT-based research.

DINNER RESERVATIONS Members: $10.00 Non-members: $15.00 TWO WAYS TO PAY FOR DINNER (but you must register – use red and yellow REGISTER link below) 1) PayPal – Use the [Register and pay the fee now] button. 2) Check or cash at the door – Use the [Register and pay the fee at the meeting] button. Correct change appreciated. Make checks payable to “IEEE Cincinnati Section”. Those desiring to use their bank’s bill payer service to send a check, rather than paying at the meeting, should contact for details.

Members should enter your IEEE Membership number when registering in order to qualify for the discounted meal price. Please enter only the digits. Experienced members might have to add leading zeros to properly enter their membership number. Use the Drop-down box on the Registration page to select Member or Non-member Dinner. The system will not allow you to select Member Dinner if you have entered the wrong IEEE Membership number or if you have typed anything other than the digits.

WALK-INS (those without reservations): You are welcome to attend this meeting and/or enjoy the dinner even if you did not register in advance. Walk-ins pay a higher $15 dinner fee. Raffel’s determines our cost based on the number of plates used; if you choose to have dinner, please pay the fee if you eat even if you arrive late or didn’t pre-register.

DINNER RESERVATION CANCELLATION POLICY An email to prior to the close of reservations is required to properly cancel your reservation. Refunds for PayPal payments are complicated, and we request that you leave the funds on deposit for a future meeting.
