Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities in Autos

As you may have read, in July 2015 it was reported that two security researchers were able to hack into a late model Jeep Cherokee through its UConnect system from 10 miles away using a laptop and makeshift cellular connection.  They were able to control functions like wipers, transmission, and brakes, which prompted Chrysler to recall 1.4 million vehicles to fix the vulnerability.

Automakers are taking notice; at the 2016 SAE Auto Congress in April, one and a half days were devoted to cybersecurity programs and solutions.

In this presentation, a local transportation security consultant, Dave Teumim, CISSP of Teumim Technical, LLC will discuss details of the Jeep Cherokee hack, auto cybersecurity in general, and some of the standards SAE is writing to address the issue. Copies of the original Jeep Cherokee hacking report, a public document, will be made available.
