25kV break-free overhead contact supply

February 14, 2017 @ 16:30 - 18:00

About the Topic:

Energy to the Overhead Contact System (OHE in IR parlance) for 25kV single phase electric traction on the Indian Railway is supplied from the State Electricity Board (Grid/SEB) three phase network, tapping a different phase combination every 30 miles. The power from adjacent Feeding Posts (TSS/FP) is insulated by a phase break Neutral Section (NS). Having an NS is undesirable as the train engineer’s attention is frequently distracted at the NS by the need to coast through the section and power interruption at the NS causes most of the locomotive failures. It is proposed to feed power at all Feeding Posts, after converting SEB three phase supply to synchronized single phase via a direct current (dc) link; completely eliminating the need for neutral sections. It is expected that this scheme will tolerate higher impedance power sources allowing it to be supplied from weaker portions of the grid as it draws balanced three phase power at near unity power factor, without distorting the voltage waveform at Point of Supply (POS).

About the Speaker: Dinesh Bansal is a retired Chief Electrical Engineer of Indian Railways, a graduate in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology and a dedicated attendee at VTS meetings on his annual visit to the US. He has four decades of experience in research, manufacturing and management on railway systems in India and internationally. He has presented technical papers at international seminars on simulation of electric power systems to reduce energy bills, overpowering of trains to increase throughput on existing networks and synchronous break-free 25kV power supply for electric railways. He has worked as a consultant for electric locomotive specification for the Dedicated Freight Corridor in India. He has been recently drawn into Internet of Things and PLC coding by IEEE peers.
